FRIDAY 15 October 2021
Dear Parents

You would have received my letter yesterday regarding Discipline and Communication. Please do read it – it contains an important message from the Principal, particularly important for parents of younger boys and how teenage behaviour and the school’s approach is perceived.

SPECTATORS
At the time of writing we are still waiting for the Department of Basic Education to publish amendments to regulations regarding spectators at school sports fixtures. Our independent school umbrella body, ISASA, is in discussions with the Department about this. Unfortunately, amendments to the Disaster Act published earlier this week which allowed spectators at sports events, do not apply to us. The DBE has to publish its amendments first: a complicated scenario, I know.

HOUSE BRAAIS
We have scheduled House Braais for boys and parents over the next three weeks in an attempt to enjoy some of the interaction we have so sorely missed this year again. In order to limit numbers we have split the Houses, so each House will have one evening for Grades 3 and 4 and another for 5, 6 and 7.

MUSIC
We are also squeezing in four evening music concerts in November:

  • Beginners’ Concert        Grade 3           4 November
  • Ensemble Concert                              10 November
  • Beginners’ Concert        Grades 4-7     17 November
  • Leavers’ Concert            Grade 7         24 November

These will take place in the Memorial Chapel and parents are invited.

As you can see, we are trying to navigate through difficult waters in order to give our boys maximum opportunities and allow for your attendance and our interaction with you, while still adhering to Covid protocols. This has meant some late notification of events and I hope you will understand this. A separate letter will be sent to Grade 7 parents regarding the special events planned for our leavers.

Kind regards

GREG BROWN

NEWS
In Memorium

Hennie Andrews worked at Bishops Prep for an amazing 32 years and passed away suddenly in April this year. A ceremony was held on Wednesday to bless a bench in his memory, officiated by Father Monwabisi Peter and Jeremy Smith. May Hennie rest in peace.
VUSA News
On Wednesday, 13 October, the official handover of the Atlas Digibus, to the VUSA Rugby and Learning Academy and Bishops, took place in Langa.

Sue Anderson, Executive Director of the Atlas Foundation South Africa, cut the ribbon and handed the keys to Greg Brown. The bus is a 42 seater Scania bus, which was fully funded by the Atlas Foundation, in partnership with Cognizant, has been converted into a mobile classroom, with 40 laptops and 2 teaching stations.

VUSA will launch its programmes in 2022 and will support the 5 primary schools in Langa with an intervention at Grade 4 level. Langa pupils learn in their mother tongue until Grade 3 and then transition to learning in English at Grade 4 level. This is where many children fall behind. The programme has thus far been partially funded by Coronation Fund Managers but additional funding is required. Please contact Nikki Matthews (nmatthews@bishops.org.za) if you wish to support or require additional information.
