Dear Parents
We have now reached the final stages of the renovations (apart from the paving) and we plan to move the Grade 6s and 4s back into the classroom block on the Stanmore campus as soon as possible. If all goes well, this should happen straight after the long weekend. No doubt everyone will be very relieved when this happens. The new library will take a few weeks longer – as soon as it is handed over we will be able to begin the very laborious process of setting it up: 11 000 books and more besides.
Staying with the library, today at assembly we handed over 13 boxes of books to the Community Chest for distribution to schools and ECD centres in need. Thank you to our boys for responding so well in a matter of days. Mr Lorenzo Davids, CEO of the Community Chest, attended the assembly to accept the books and Matthew Owen and Grant Weich handed over one of the boxes in a symbolic gesture. Mr Davids addressed the boys giving his own view about the value of books and reading and thanking them with a wonderful message about how small, thoughtful actions can lead to greater things. He challenged them to go on to do something great for South Africa. Very touchingly he also handed over two books to the school which his father had given him and he had read at age nine: Eugene Marais’ “My Friends the Baboons” and “Short Stories from Southern Africa”, including writers such as Doris Lessing and Alan Paton. Really advanced reading for a nine year old; and an amazing gesture.
Finally, this Monday will be the school’s first meat-free Monday. As I have mentioned before, this is the Prep Student Council’s own recommendation which will be implemented across the campus – a real feather in their cap. No meat will be served in any of the dining rooms. We are doing it to bring attention to the issue of sustainability around meat production and the more environmentally friendly alternative of growing crops. It would be appreciated if you do not put any meat in your son’s lunch box on this Monday in support of what we will be doing.
Kind regards
GREG BROWN
