Dear Parents
“We cannot all do great things on this earth
But we can all do small things with great love.”
Mother Theresa
Today our boys are in civvies and their payment is a can of pet food, a water bowl, leads, dog biscuits and so on. All for a number of animal shelters in Cape Town, places that care for our abused, neglected or unwanted animals.
Yesterday the College boys dedicated their normal Chapel Service to the women and children in our society who are abused, have violence perpetrated against them or are neglected and disregarded. Following that, all wearing some additional article of black clothing, they walked slowly down the Avenue to line Campground Road in a silent vigil to express their condemnation of any form of violence against women and children. A small action but of profound importance and marking a moment in our community where we stand up and against.
On Tuesday we will ask all our boys and staff to wear something pink, a cap, ribbon, scarf, etc, to show our respect for women and take a stand against all forms of violence against women and children. We will take some specific action on the day to mark our commitment. I think we know that one day is symbolic but not enough. We need to redouble our efforts to ensure our boys grow up without gender bias, with a deep sense of respect and regard for women of all ages and, as staff and parents, to model this for our boys.
Our boys have amazed us with their comments, ideas and sensitivity through this week. We have to work on the unthinking, implicit, “crowd-pleasing”, unaware moments.
Kind regards
GREG BROWN
