Dear Parents
“To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived – that is to have succeeded.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Over the last weeks we have spoken about our responsibility to others, what we can each do to ensure that each of us feels welcome and experiences a real sense of belonging at Bishops, regardless of the differences among us. At grade assemblies this week both Father Monwabisi and I have spoken to the boys about our environment and stewardship.
We mentioned the many sea animals who die a slow and painful death after swallowing a plastic bag thrown overboard or dropped in the street or not recycled; about unethical practices where wild animals are rehabilitated or bred in captivity for the canned hunting industry or zoos abroad; not littering or disturbing the plant life on our beautiful mountains. Again, what are the small things they can do – always recycle what can be recycled, never litter, talk to their parents about wildlife preservation practices, support anti-rhino poaching in whatever way possible. To take what we have received and leave it better than we have found it. Everyone of us is a steward holding and protecting the good and resolving and improving on the bad.
I mentioned Term 4 extra-murals last week. Please see further details below provided by Mr Chris Groom.
We are planning to introduce a comprehensive and varied sports programme for the boys in term 4. Unfortunately, because of the Covid restrictions, we are still unable at this stage to have fixtures with our neighbouring schools. The boys are longing for some competition and so we will be implementing many fun games and activities during the weekday practices. The focus of these games will be on mass participation and enjoyment. Please click on the link to see the sports that will be on offer from Monday to Thursday next term. We would like the boys to do at least two afternoons of extra mural activities at Bishops next term. Please note that one of the activities must be a team sport – cricket or water polo. Some boys may want to be involved on every afternoon. If your son is one of them, and a team sport that has two practices a week clashes with an activity, he may miss one of the practices to accommodate his choices. We would like to keep the boys as active as possible and boys may join sports in term 4 that they did not do in term 1. Your son’s Form teacher has asked him in class what activities he would like to do in term 4. Please check with him and if you would like to add or change a choice, please contact Mr Khwezi Mqomboti.
We are also planning a Super Saturday programme that will focus on a variety of winter sports (hockey, soccer and rugby). This programme will not be every Saturday and is voluntary – boys will have to sign up in the week prior to the event to take part. Exact dates for this programme will be sent to you next week so that families can plan around these Saturdays. We are hoping that most boys will participate in the Saturday programme.
Best wishes for a relaxing weekend.
Kind regards
GREG BROWN
