FRIDAY 17 July 2020
Dear Parents

COVID-19 UPDATE

I think the boys are being responsible about wearing their masks; thank you for making sure that your son always has a mask for school. Social distancing works very well in the classroom but it needs a bit more supervision during break time simply because boys forget about it in the excitement of the moment. So we keep reminding them.

We are concerned that mindful behaviour is observed outside of the school context as well:
• If a small lift club, boys must wear their masks in the car.
• No parties.
• No activities in large crowds.

While we cannot control what happens outside of the school, risky behaviour outside the school can end up endangering the community which we are all obviously trying to avoid. Please support us here.

THIRD TERM ASSESSMENT

Returning to a full school timetable has been wonderful and we can see the boys really enjoying it too. Extra lessons after school continue where needed and at present we are focusing on Maths.

A range of formal assessments will be done through the term. Feedback will be in the form of rubrics and marks with the results of mark-based tasks being uploaded onto myBishopsLife. The Term 3 Test Timetable for boys in Grades 4-7 will be placed on the calendar early next week. Our Head of Academics will be in touch with the Remote Learning Group of boys shortly.

If your son is absent for any reason, and he is not very sick, please ensure that he goes on the Remote Learning site and logs into Teams. Some boys are returning to school having done no work at home at all.

MANDELA DAY

Today we celebrate and observe Mandela Day. For our boys it will be in the form of action. Speaking to some boys during the week, I have been impressed about how they were preparing for Friday and today their enthusiasm and sense of purpose was so evident. Small actions, I know, but actions nevertheless that show care and respect for others and live out the message of Madiba. They also reflected and discussed Nelson Mandela’s contribution and legacy in class during the course of the day. Here is the clip that they were shown: Johnny Clegg with Nelson Mandela in Frankfurt in 1999 singing Asimbonanga.

You will all have received the letter from the Principal earlier this week. From that you will know that we are actively engaged in discussions with Transformation and Social Justice consultants as well as other stakeholders in our community and more news of our planned process should follow soon.

Enjoy your weekend.

Kind regards
