FRIDAY 19 March 2021
Dear Parents

We have nothing new to report on this for which we are grateful. The boys continue to wear masks (for the most part, quite diligently), sanitise regularly and social distance indoors.

The boys are loving playing sport and at yesterday morning’s Grade 6/7 Assembly, we had three musicians perform for us – the first time a boy has performed on the Jagger stage for his peers since March 2020. So with smaller assemblies we are able to add important aspects of our school life back into the mix.

Please check extra-mural arrangements for next week carefully as we hope to have a last week of sports matches. Who we will play against and what sports we will play will depend on the Department of Basic Education’s Regulations due to be gazetted today.

Please do abide by the no spectator rule. No spectators are allowed at school activities, including sports matches and practices. It is very embarrassing to have to ask parents to leave a venue and no coach likes having to do this.

We all know that infection numbers are down in the country but developments in Europe and a number of specialists in the field do indicate the very real possibility of a third wave. So please do be mindful of this in the coming weeks. It is we, the adults, who are the spreaders and the more careful we all are, the more likely it is that our school can continue to operate at full capacity with boys enjoying as complete an experience as possible.

On Sunday we observe Human Rights Day so Monday is a public holiday. With a long weekend it is so easy to forget what it commemorates and why it is so important.

Sharpeville happened 61 years ago and so much has changed since then. But, in reality, so many in our country still do not have many of their basic human rights met yet. I will address this in assemblies over the next weeks; what does this mean for us, for boys in a school such as Bishops and what are our responsibilities, as human beings, regardless of age? What can each one of us learn and do to improve our society, starting small and within our sphere of influence?

Have a good long weekend.

Kind regards
