FRIDAY 19 August 2022
Dear Parents

A few things this week ……

Firstly, the Vusa Cyclathon held last weekend was an enormous success.  23 teams cycled in the Woodlands Pavilion continuously for 24 hours: a number of staff teams from Pre-Prep and Prep, the Bishops Rugby Supporters Club and a large number of teams of College boys. A few brothers in the Prep also joined so it might be an idea to enter some Prep boy teams for the next Cyclathon.  Over R500 000 was raised for the Vusa Rugby and Learning Academy in Langa which Bishops co-ordinates.  (For more information go to their website www.vusarugbyacademy.com.)  Interestingly enough the average donation was between R500 and R1 500 which just goes to show the power in numbers. Thank you for your support.

Saturday saw a very special moment on the rugby field. Many of our Hindu boys observed Raksha Bandhan, one of the oldest festivals in India, a day where the love and bond between siblings is celebrated by the tying of a Raki, a colourful string, at the wrist, promising a bond of safety and love. One of the boys in the U13A rugby side was wearing a tie last week so the coach and team decided to wear one on their wrists for their game against Wynberg on Saturday.  A great celebration of brotherhood but also of cultural inter-connectedness, interest in others and their cultures and faith traditions and practices; an act of sharing in another’s culture, as in the words of the Zulu greeting, “Siyabona; I see you”.

Two points then on the use of the internet and devices:

  • Please ensure that your son (in Grades 4-7) has downloaded the Klikd App by Monday. An email was sent to you earlier this week with all the instructions. Your son cannot do so without your intervention.
  • Next week boys, also from Grades 4-7, will sign the school’s Acceptable Usage Policy regarding technology usage.  Teachers will take them through the policy and we will email it to you on Monday. Your son will bring a slip home acknowledging his responsibility as a user at school and we will need you to sign it as well. The form for signature will be self-explanatory.

Both the Klikd app and AUP are designed to make our boys aware, responsible and respectful digital citizens.

All the best for a good weekend.

Kind regards

Extra-Murals

Our current Extra-mural programme comes to an end after the Rondebosch rugby matches on Saturday 27 August.

From Monday, 29 August we will be following a revised programme. Both staff and boys are extremely excited about the upcoming soccer season and we look forward to seeing our boys test their skills against other schools.

Click HERE for the link to the Revised Term 3 Extra-Mural Programme

Soccer and cross-country are compulsory for all boys. Boys may only be excused from cross-country if they are involved in another school activity which takes preference. This means that most of our boys will be doing a maximum of 3 afternoons of sport a week. Some, however, may be a little busier as we still have the  following activities before the end of Term 3: inter-house events, 7s rugby, U12 Day/Night Hockey, preparation for upcoming cricket tours and water polo tournaments, and rehearsals for our Term 4 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Boys involved in the afore- mentioned activities may be excused from cross-country when these events take place.
Clubs and music continue as per the Extra-mural programme linked above.
Fencing and Judo continue as normal.
There are still some chess matches that need to be played.
Further details and specific arrangements around particular events will be shared with you closer to the time.

Request from the Front Office

Please keep the dropping off of forgotten items to a minimum. If you need to drop an item off at the front office, please DO NOT ask the security guard to do so for you. He is responsible for protecting our premises and is not allowed to accept items for our boys.

NEWS
Spotlight on isiXhosa
On Friday, the isiXhosa department celebrated with snippets of work from across the Grades. This took the form of songs, dialogues and videos showcasing the work done in class. The celebration ended with the whole school learning a Gwijo song. The Gwijo style singing is used to praise and celebrate and to tell a story. It has become very popular at rugby games. It has been wonderful to hear the song “iBishops Likhaya lam” being sung by all our boys! Please visit our Facebook and Instagram pages for further photos and video clips.
Rugby News
Rick the Bear for this week was awarded to the U11C team for an outstanding team performance vs Wynberg. Well done, boys!

Charlton House News
The Charlton Grade 5s thoroughly enjoyed their outing to see DC League of Super-Pets last week. We think Mr de Sousa and Mr Drury enjoyed the movie even more than the boys!
