Dear Parents
PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION
You may have heard David Dalling, one of the members of the Parents’ Association Committee, on KFM yesterday, pledging a donation of R25 000 from the Parents’ Association to the Peninsula School Feeding Scheme. He challenged Parents’ Associations of other schools to do the same or similar, also encouraging any Bishops parents who might want to make further personal donations. This committee and members, over the last few years, have done a great deal for our partnerships with Athwood Primary, St Paul’s Primary and VUSA and made outreach a strong priority.
A number of current Committee members will be stepping down at the PA AGM on 31 August next term as they are Grade 7 parents or have finished their three years. We will be needing new volunteers to put their names forward, so please do give this opportunity some thought.
ROAD SAFETY
We have had two neighbours contact us about road safety over the last week. One about bicycle safety and the other about pedestrians and pavement space.
If your son comes to school on a bicycle – and if you live close enough for it to be practical, it is so good for developing their independence – please could you ensure that:
- he only rides with a helmet;
- he knows the rules of the road; and
- he wears some form of reflective clothing (particularly in winter).
On the pedestrian space we have the continued problem of many boys not being able to walk on the pavement with their bags because parents are parked on the pavement. I want to start a system where parents park in the road in Duke Road to allow the boys to walk up to sport easily and safely. In addition, no one should park on the Evergreen side of Duke Road where there is a No Parking sign. Please do support us in this.
SCHOLARSHIPS
I am very pleased to announce that four of our Grade 7s have been awarded College Academic Scholarships after sitting the Common Entrance examinations.
English Kaleb Pillay
Maths Arman Patel
General Tristan Brunton
General Hamaad Badroodien
Congratulations to them.
CIVVIES DAY
Finally, Ms Rowen Ravera from the U-Turn Organisation, was our guest at assembly this morning. She gave a very good interactive presentation on their work with Cape Town’s homeless; the cycles of poverty, violence and substance abuse that led to their living on the streets. U-Turn’s aim is a turnaround strategy with physical support as well as life skills and work skills programmes – an opportunity for people who are homeless to improve on the circumstances in which they find themselves. Next week’s civvies day collection is clothing which goes to clothing the actual people living on the streets as well as to U-Turn’s nine shops in Cape Town that sell 2nd hand clothing to fund their skills programme. Clothing for any age will be appreciated.
Enjoy your weekend.
Kind regards
GREG BROWN
