Dear Parents
GRADE 7 TOUR
The Grade 7s are back from their 9 days in KwaZulu-Natal, exhausted but also exhilarated by such a varied and independence-growing experience. A huge thank you must go to the 10 teachers, under the leadership of Mark Erlangsen, who accompanied them and looked after them throughout. Parents and staff will be very pleased to hear that we had excellent feedback on the behaviour and friendliness of our boys from the host schools, parents and staff. It is how we bring them up to be so it is always very rewarding to hear this.
DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP/SCREEN TIME/SOCIAL MEDIA CONCERNS and our BOYS
As I have indicated earlier we have re-looked at our monitoring and controls of the iPad usage at school; similarly we committed to finding new ways to assist parents with ideas and practices to better be able to control our boys’ and help them to control both the amount of screen time and what is being watched and played. I have often sent out emails about this but it has been apparent that we want something “stronger”.
Consequently we have decided to partner with Klikd which will hopefully provide us all with a new and different solution. Founded by clinical psychologist, Pam Tudin and social media lawyer, Sarah Hoffman, Klikd brings a unique combined expertise to cyber safety education.
In an increasingly digital world with new apps, explicit YouTube videos, addictive video games and often dangerous Tik Tok challenges popping up faster than we can say “How was school, honey?” – never has it been more challenging to be a parent.
To exclude your child from participation amounts to social suicide. To allow your child access to a smart device and free access without boundaries and knowledge of what it is you are giving your child license to use, is potentially treacherous. With screens here to stay, never has it been more important to upskill our children to be safe, responsible and happy online.
The programme will include parent talks, a Klikd App and digital citizenship programme for Grade 4 – 7 boys (including regular parent updates and tools). Staff will also receive training on using the App in lessons.
Please reserve the dates for the opening parent talk. Details are under TAKE Note.
Please make every effort to attend – we need to start (or re-start) together to ensure our boys remain safe and enjoy balanced lives with varied downtime activities.
REPORTS
Reports will be available online by Friday 24 June. This is a very important report reflective of your son’s progress of the first half of the academic year. Please do discuss his results and his teachers’ comments with him. At the end of the holiday it will be a good time to remind him about changes in attitude or work that might be necessary as well as his goals going forward.
INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS RUGBY FESTIVAL
The U13A Rugby Team will be participating in the Independent Schools Rugby Festival which Bishops is hosting and starts tomorrow. We wish our boys well and look forward to a very exciting and successful Festival over the next five days.
We wish our boys a very happy holiday. Hopefully you will have some time to relax with them and if you are going away, safe travels.
Schools starts for the third term on Tuesday 19 July.
God Bless
Kind regards
GREG BROWN
