Dear Parents
BOYS and their HAIR
Boys' hair - style, length and tidiness - can become a major issue at school and we don't want it to be. Having said that though we do wear a uniform so hair must be approriately cut and similarly boys have to be able to concentrate, read and work without having to constantly flick their hair out of their eyes.
If you have a son at the College you will know that they re-considered their hair policy earlier in the year and have issued a new policy. We have studied that and have made some changes to ours as a result of that. However we have taken from it that which is age appropriate for Prep boys.
Most of our boys have reasonable school style haircuts but there are some who want something more stylish. So this new policy clarifies the parameters for us all so that there should not be a need for hair to be an issue at school. There is obviously always room for interpretation but in that case I would urge you to err on the side of caution. Please see our revised hair policy HERE.
TRAFFIC/PARKING and the LIKE
I am sorry to have to write about this again but I must. This is a reminder to all parents to please treat our security guards with kindness and respect. They perform a difficult job and are very good and caring with our boys. We teach the boys to show respect and appreciation to every member of staff. The cones they put out on the pavements near the crossings are done so on our instruction, to maximise visibility and to provide space on the main gathering points for the boys.
I do receive complaints every now and again about parents being uncooperative and making conditions difficult for security staff to carry out their duties. We are a community committed to bringing up our boys to be good men so this should not be happening here.
There is also a problem in Duke Road with parents parking on the pavements so that it is difficult for those boys heading to the College campus for sport to walk on the pavement. They either risk knocking the cars with their bags or hockey sticks, etc or have to walk in the road, both of which are far from ideal. At the moment it looks like the only solution is to place cones along the pavement in the peak afternoon time. So I ask you to please consider parking in the parking area near the Campground Road.
ROHAN BLOOM FOUNDATION
Rohan Bloom was a Bishops boy, a top cricketer, who arrived at College a number of years ago excited at the prospect of throwing himself into the life of the school. Very sadly he was diagnosed with cancer early in his Grade 8 year and after many months of treatment and enormous bravery and positivity on his part, he passed away in Grade 9. He was an inspiration to all.
His parents started the Rohan Bloom Foundation to raise money to build a suitable hospice for young people in Rohan's situation. It is a very active organisation with many aspects to its work and we have been asked to participate in their 245 challenge and provide 245 sandwiches this coming Tuesday which will go to ECD centres in communities who are under enormous pressure financially and therefore in what they can provide their children or grandchildren. We are asking every boy to bring a sandwich to school on Tuesday. It would be a great idea is your son could be involved in making the sandwich. 24 May was Rohan's birthday hence the 245 challenge, but hopefully we will surpass 245 sandwiches by at least a hundred.
Enjoy the weekend.
Kind regards
GREG BROWN
