FRIDAY 14 OCtober 2022
Dear Parents

Welcome back to the 4th term. I’m sure you can’t quite believe that we are already heading for the end of the year with only eight weeks left until we close on 8 December.  There are a number of highlights to this term and our dramatic production promises to be one of the major highlights.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
………….. the first dramatic production since 2019
………….. the first open air production in Stanmore Cottage’s garden
………….. the first Shakespearean production at the Prep for more than twenty years

The play has been specifically adapted for young performers – we are using our Grades 6s and 7s together with girls from Reddam Constantia. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s most widely performed plays and is a delightful trip into a magic world in the forest with much humour and many surprises.

Performances take place in the first week of November and picnic hampers will be available for families who want to arrive earlier and enjoy supper on the lawn.  Booking details will follow shortly.

The 4th term always includes a number of special events, as we approach Christmas, celebrate the year’s achievements and say farewell to our Grade 7s. The year ends with our whole school Prizegiving (in line with pre-Covid times) on the morning of 8 December. Please support the school by not making any arrangements to take your son our of school early. We have a very carefully crafted programme that takes the boys right through to the last day – it allows for a number of special experiences, celebrations and events that bring the year to a positive and fitting close.

If your son takes music, please note that Mr Scott is on sabbatical this term. Mrs Sheard and Ms Clapperton are running the Department in his absence. If you have any queries that your son’s music teacher cannot answer or assist you with, please address these to Ms Clapperton sclapperton@bishops.org.za.

We hope that you will enjoy this term with us and attend as many of the functions and events as possible.

Kind regards

GREG BROWN

NEWS
Orange River Trip
The 4 Day Orange River Trip in Southern Namibia was more than just a river trip! Bishops Prep families got to experience gourmet river food, the African night sky, the starkly barren Richtersveld National Park, fairy dust and a fisherman's dream to name a few. It was great to make new friends and the boys and girls on the trip had the time of their lives. The canoeing was largely a peaceful affair interrupted by some exhilarating rapids, which got the better of a few canoeists. It was an incredible experience which gave parents the ideal opportunity to bond with their children. We will definitely be going back next year, so keep an eye out for details of that trip.
Crazy Hat Day
There was quite a spectacle on campus today as boys and staff donned all manner of headgear on CRAZY HAT DAY. Cape Town-based NGO, Paedspal, have an annual ‘Hats On 4 Children’s Palliative Care’ (#HatsOn4CPC) to raise awareness of the palliative care needs of children with serious and often complex life-threatening and life-shortening illnesses and their families.Dr Nupen, a parent at the Pre-Prep and a representative of Paedspal, gave a very positive and heart-warming presentation to the school at assembly. Well done to the boys who received prizes for the most creative home-made hat!
Library News
Here we have the library mascot, Slothy, on an epic safari in the Kruger with his reading-handler for the week, Matthew Fox. Slothy is starting to travel the nation and next year, the world! (Just like when we open a book and get lost in another world of adventures!) The 2022 Million Word Challenge is coming to a close so boys must be sure to come to library at lunch break to add up word counts and ensure their spot in the club.
Waste Audit
Plant The Seed conducted a Waste Audit at the Prep yesterday. The learners assisted in sorting the various items into categories to distinguish recyclable vs non-recyclable waste and what food waste can be composted. Each bag was then weighed. This practical and the report will allow us to understand:
  • The percentage breakdown and weight of various waste materials in the schools’ bins on an average week.
  • Gain insight into the patterns of waste disposed of at the school (i.e., where the most waste is thrown away, where food waste is mostly generated, etc).
  • Identify and observe weak points in the waste system and develop specific solutions to the identified issues.
  • Develop broad ideas and solutions to make the school's waste system more effective.
School Enhancements

A beautiful fountain has been installed in the quad outside Jagger Hall. This was a gift from the Grade 7 Classes of 2018 and 2019. We also have a brand new mural in the reading area upstairs in the classroom block, a map of the world in written form, which has sparked a lot of interest from the boys.
