Dear Parents
AN ACT OF KINDNESS
Last Friday the College held their Matric Prizegiving followed by Valedictory in the Memorial Chapel. It was such an inspiring morning seeing these boys, after thirteen years at school, receiving awards, the Head of School and his two Deputy Heads both speaking with such pride of their school and appreciation for the opportunities and experiences, their teachers' enormous care for them, their peer friendships and happy times together and their parents, who had made this all possible and supported them throughout.
The 2022 Head of School, Suhayl Khalfey, spoke to his fellow matrics about the importance of being kind, deliberately kind, whenever they could be. Such a simple injunction but so profound – how different our world would be if there was more kindness, much more. He spoke of an act of kindness that he believed changed his life.
Mrs Vivienne Mallett, wife of legendary Bishops Principal, Anthony Mallett, who led the school from 1964 to 1982, fell on Table Mountain nine years ago and sustained a series of very serious injuries. A Dr Khalfey played a major part in her subsequent treatment and recovery. With Vivienne Mallett so appreciative and impressed by the treatment she received and such a fan of Bishops, the Khalfeys were recommended to the Prep … and to cut a long story short … Suhayl arrived at Bishops in Grade 4. And, as they say, the rest is history.
It is so easy for young people to forget the actions of adults that had a special impact on their lives, particularly in their young years, so to hear this story told and used as the example of what Suhayl was exhorting his peers to do and be, was particularly moving.
We wish our matrics well with their final exams and as they go forward into the world.
ENTRANCE TO COLLEGE AND ACCESS
We will be undertaking a major renovation project at the main entrance to the College that will provide suitable facilities for our security guards as well as secure gates that will allow us to close off the College if needed. In addition, we will be providing proper parking bays on the left as one enters the campus, resurfacing the first section of the road up to the Woodlands entrance and lighting the avenue to allow for better security at night. This project will significantly improve the entrance to the school but will cause some discomfort for a while as the work is being done. We will shortly be instituting a one-way traffic flow (as for Covid) into the campus from Campground Road with exit out the bottom via Silwood Road (one way out) and Riverton Road (both in and out). We apologise for this inconvenience but the end result will be worth the discomfort!
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
A Midsummer Night’s Dream opens on Wednesday night and we wish our boys and the girls from Reddam, as well as all staff involved, a very successful production. Tickets sold out so quickly that we had to add an extra performance, so a huge thank you to you for your support.
GRADE 7 isiXHOSA FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE
As you know, this year was the first time that Grade 7 boys had the option to choose isiXhosa as their First Additional Language in place of Afrikaans. It has been very successful and we are excited to offer it again next year. A meeting will be held for interested parents of Grade 6 boys on Wednesday, 9th November and an invitation will follow in the next few days.
Kind regards
GREG BROWN
