THURSDAY 27 July 2023
Dear Parents

WELCOME

We welcome Sue Burgess and Richard Goedhals back to the Prep. Sue will be substituting for Bruce Mitchell who is on a term’s sabbatical, and Richard takes over Mandy Gloak’s class until the end of the year.

MANDELA DAY

Tomorrow we will be observing Mandela Day with a special assembly reflecting on the life and times of Madiba.  While there is a tinned food collection and we are hoping to reach 100m with the can “snake” which will involve the boys, we also wanted our boys and staff to be doing something for 67 minutes. So each class will prepare sandwich packs with boys divided into groups, making sandwiches, decorating bags with messages and packing and sealing sandwiches, fruit and a sweet.  These will then go to Ikhaya Le Themba and a group of boys will be involved in the handover. A small but meaningful action by our boys to both raise their awareness of South Africa’s socio-economic inequalities and to make a difference for a day in the lives of some of our fellow South Africans.

Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”

Best wishes

Kind regards

Mandela Day - Collect and Connect

The collection of canned food (meat, vegetables or fruit, will take place tomorrow, Friday 28 July, so please send these along with your sons to the library first thing in the morning. We would really like to beat last year's record of a 92m long line of tinned food! The items will be donated to Ikhaya Le Themba. This charity gives disadvantaged children a hope and a future by providing a safe space to play, nutritious food to eat and provides community leaders with personalised education and training.

The boys will also be making sandwiches for 67 minutes in each class. These will be added to decorated lunch packs along with a piece of fruit and a treat, also to be to donated to Ikhaya Le Themba.

Second Hand Shop

Sasha and Julie, the amazing "queens" of our Second Hand shop, will be coming to the end of their reign as their sons move on to College next year. We are looking for volunteers to take their places. Please consider taking on this very valuable service to the school and our parents. If you are interested, or have any questions, please contact Sasha or Julie.

Get Ready for the 24-Hour Cycle Challenge brought to you by Investec!
Mark your calendars for the highly anticipated 24-Hour Cycle Challenge scheduled for the 2nd and 3rd of September. This event is not only a perfect family day out but also serves a wonderful cause. You asked, we listened… this year we are setting up a mini 12-hour challenge for the Prep boys (Grade 4 -7s).  We have allocated two bikes per grade and will share sign up information through the class groups.   Please encourage your boys to sign up for a team and be part of this meaningful endeavour.  Teams for Parents, Staff and ODs are also available, but spaces are limited.  Please contact Nikki Matthews or Kirsty Hatt for more information. Please watch THIS short clip.

Thank you all for your continued support and active participation in making a positive impact on our community. #StrongerTogether

Help to build a church in Crossroads
Earlier this year Bishops College was approached by the Rev Rachel Mash, who is the priest of the Eluvukweni Anglican Church in Crossroads. Eluvukweni has had an ongoing fundraising project to raise money to build a church. In order to finally launch this project, they still need R200 000. The Bishops Music Departments, in conjunction with the Parents’ Association, have taken on this very worthwhile cause and hope to raise this amount they need - and maybe even a little more! To launch this project the boys and staff of the College and Prep Music Departments, along with the Eluvukweni Church Choir, will be having a concert on Sunday 6 August at 15:30, in the Memorial Chapel. Tickets for the concert will be available early next term from the Music Department. We would love to fill the Chapel for this event. If, however, you are not able to attend the concert, we would appeal to you to donate to this very worthwhile cause. Contributions can be paid on Snap Scan. The QR code is below. Any donations are most welcome!
Why: We are helping to build a church in Crossroads
How: We are holding a concert
When: Sunday 6 August at 15:30 in the Memorial Chapel
Book your ticket : Payment, by SnapScan, https://pos.snapscan.io/qr/PXW226216 can be made at the College Admin Building, the College Music Department or the Prep Music Department. As this is a fundraising concert, the ticket price is R200. ALL proceeds will go to the Church Fund.

Rick the Bear was awarded to the U11A team this week. They won 4 out 4 matches in Beaufort West. They played some beautiful rugby that the original Beaufort West tour organiser, Rick Skeeles, would have been proud of. Well done, team!
