Dear Parents
DUKE ROAD
This week I received an email from a very irritated sender about the complete disregard for traffic rules and the safety of our boys at drop off and collection times by our parents. A number of photographs were supplied and these were quite shocking. Parents are parking on the wrong side of the road, right next to or on the pedestrian crossing, opening doors onto the road, and so on. And in addition, our security guard is ignored by parents when he asks them to move on or obey the rules.
I feel like a real “nag” in keeping raising this issue with you. But it does seem as if a number of parents are simply ignoring the rules that don’t suit them. From an educational point of view, this is poor modelling on the part of these drivers, but more importantly, it is a safety issue. Please park on the correct side of the road only – we ask that you use Duke Road as a one way going down to the station - so therefore on the Grade 3 Rossall side - and boys use the pedestrian crossing to cross to the Jagger Hall side. I have written many times before, the most recent being in the Newsletter of 18 May, and the blatant disregard on the part of some remains disturbing.
FEEDBACK FROM A DURBANVILLE PARENT
After having to raise concerns about such negative conduct above, I am pleased to report on an email the U12A hockey coaches received after the exchange:
“I would like to take this opportunity to address our experience as parents at Hartleyvale playing against your under 12A team. Although your team were nothing short of brilliant in their game, what stood out most was the following: their sportsmanship, attitude and character as players and young boys on and off the field. With all this said, I want to thank you for your input and involvement in building up these young sports stars. This leaves us with a deep feeling of hope and appreciation.”
We also heard about similar responses to the attitude and behaviour of other teams. As parents and teachers, this is what we work towards, teaching our boys these values, values that can only be tested in the living of them. Well done to these boys.
RONDEBOSCH DERBY
This is our Rondebosch Derby week and one of the coldest in a while. I hope you have enjoyed the hockey fixtures and will enjoy the other sports over the next few days. Traditionally many of our boys attend the College 1st XV rugby game, this term being played at Rondebosch.
GRADE 7 TOUR
Next week our Grade 7 class leave for the annual KZN Tour; eight nights away, playing a number of sports, music and chess at Clifton Prep in Durban and St Charles College in Pietermaritzburg. The trip includes historical and cultural visits as well as a few days at an adventure camp in Sugar Bay. We wish all the boys and staff a wonderful, happy and safe trip. I will spend the first few days of the trip with them.
Best wishes.
Kind regards
GREG BROWN
