Dear Parents
FREEDOM DAY
At tomorrow’s assembly we will celebrate South Africa’s first ever democratic national election where every South African, 18 years old and older, was allowed to cast his or her vote, regardless of race, class, culture or creed. We will also honour those who fought, campaigned and made this happen, many at great personal expense. And we cannot not refer to the fact that our country still has much to do on the road to freedom, that we all have a task to ensure that all South Africans become truly free.
Our Saturday rugby fixtures against Wynberg Boys take place on Freedom Day itself. Considering that State schools only opened to all races in 1991, three years before the election, it is a wonderful opportunity to interact in a diverse environment, something that would have been impossible 34 years ago. We have had discussions with Wynberg and there will be some actions and moments where we symbolically observe and celebrate all that Freedom Day represents.
CRIME REPORT
According to the neighbourhood group, there has been an increase in criminal activity around the school in recent weeks; break ins, a mugging and some petty thefts. I have spoken to the boys and staff about this, not that we want the boys to be afraid, but they do need to be alert, follow the rules about walking to and from sport in groups and not leaving their belongings unattended outside or near the gate. We advise being extra careful by ensuring no visible valuables are left in your car and keeping car doors locked at all times.
SAFETY
College has asked us to remind all parents of the speed limit on the campus – 20km maximum at all times.
Similarly, we ask that you park responsibly around the Prep – not blocking pavements, on or right next to our pedestrian crossings. No stopping in the middle of the road to pick up or drop off. We have two open parking areas at the top and bottom of Duke Road where you can park and walk to the school. Please do make drivers, au pairs and other family members aware of these rules. The safety of our boys is paramount.
Have a good weekend.
Kind regards
GREG BROWN
