Dear Parents

VUSA 24 HOUR CYCLATHON – 24 AUGUST
Please see the advertisement below. This is the major annual fundraiser for our Vusa Rugby & Learning Academy and also a real fun community event. Please do support this event whether cycling or financially. Last year, together with Investec’s support, R1 000 000 was raised.

175 MUSIC CELEBRATION
Last week saw us celebrate our 175th year through music. It was a truly inspiring and uplifting event. For the first time in my time at Bishops, we had boys from the Pre-Prep, Prep and College performing together, approximately 250 boys from ages 7 to 18.  I congratulate our boys and staff – this concert required an enormous amount of work over and above preparing boys for Eisteddfods and ABRSM exams, a huge logistical plan and execution too.

The Chapel was used for this occasion – the perfect place at Bishops to hold this celebration - the Chapel is the centre of our school and community and it is in the Chapel that music started and in the Chapel where music plays a fundamental role in worship. So, bravo to all our musicians and staff – our thanks to them all and you for your support over the two evenings.

WOMEN’S DAY
Tomorrow we celebrate women, their role in all our lives, remembering that it was women who rose up and marched on the Union buildings in 1956 to protest against the country’s heinous pass laws and its effects on the black population of South Africa. But we still have to stand up for women in terms of equality, equal access in terms of positions in society and the abuse we see meted out against women, with South Africa having one of the highest rates of gender-based violence in the world. May this generation of boys grow up to respect women at all times, creating a new society where men do not use physical strength or any form of dominance to undermine and oppress women.

Enjoy the long weekend and keep warm.

Kind regards

GREG BROWN

Weekly Winners

The Hockey Husky goes to an individual person this week, which is unusual, but well-deserved. Sam Neethling was struck on the head while playing Wynberg. He went to hospital and received 4 stitches. He then had a scan and a fracture to the skull was detected. He was only discharged from hospital the next morning at 7:30am and came straight to school to play in the 175 Music Concert that morning and again in the evening. Well done on being so brave and for also showing such commitment to music and the school.

Rick the Bear was awarded to the U12A team this week for a determined and passionate performance! Well done, team!
