THURSDAY 15 August 2024
Dear Parents

A very short letter from me this week after last week’s newsletter and separate letter, “What’s in a Word?”.

This week marks the end of the rugby and hockey season with the Bish-Bosch Derby.  We encourage as many boys as possible to attend these final games and it is traditional for a large contingent of Prep boys to attend the last XV game.  We hope for the same this year and the game will be on the Rondebosch Boys High School ‘s main field.  You are also very welcome – it always promises to be an exciting end to the season.

Although there are still a few hockey and rugby tournaments, soccer  will start on Monday.  So we will have a month of soccer, something our boys are really looking forward to.

Kind regards

GREG BROWN

Thank you from VUSA

Thank you to everyone who dropped off recycled goods for our VUSA Market Day which is taking place on Saturday 17 August,2024 at Langa Sports Grounds. The children have been busy all week preparing their items and are so excited for the event.

Of all the VUSA programs, the impact of this one is particularly close to our hearts. Over seven months, the children work closely with Capitec and VUSA facilitators to develop entrepreneurial skills. They start by identifying a problem and work their way through budgeting and marketing culminating in "Shark Tank" pitches to teams of scary Capitec corporates. ( actually lovely, encouraging, and wise Capitec volunteers but, to a 13-year-old, it can feel quite intimidating!)

On Saturday, they’ll bring their ideas to life by marketing and selling their products. While the initial problems they identified might not always align perfectly with the final products they gain a deeper understanding that they can indeed find solutions to many challenges.
Some have focused on environmental issues, using recycled materials to create their products; others on food security, and of course, the ever-popular boerie roll stand that always sells out. Most importantly, they have learnt that they can create their own opportunities instead of waiting for them to appear.
Thank you to everyone who supported this initiative and for generously dropping off supplies for our children. Your contributions have made a real difference!

History of Bishops
As part of our 175th celebrations we commissioned the writing of a “History of Bishops, the past 25 years”. You may know that in 1999, at the 150th anniversary, a full school history was published in book format of the preceding 150 years. Our current project has been to add the next 25 years to that. For this project we have launched a website, rather than a book. The current History was written by retired Bishops Senior Vice Principal, Michael King, who was at Bishops for 25 years. He has been researching and developing this project for the best part of a year, and we are very proud to introduce his 175 Online History: 1999-2024 https://history.bishops.org.za/
This history is told as a narrative through “chapters” outlined by each of the Principals during this period. There are also specific articles delving deeply into particular areas of Bishops, from sport to culture, spirituality to technology. In addition, there are also the usual lists, which indicate all the important categories at Bishops, from staff to Head Boys and more.
We hope you enjoy this retrospective of the past 25 years and encourage you to read this new and valuable update on our school.
NEWS
Memories from Book Week
Here is a snapshot of some memories from last week: Sealee the Reading Mascot found family, Book Bingo, Book Sale, 3 new word-millionaires joined the book club and our shining Olympic flame!
Hockey News
U13A hockey team took part in the Enhanced Sports Co-ed Cup last weekend. They played 4 and won 4 and qualified for the final to be played against Kenridge. Unfortunately, the match was cancelled due to the weather and flooded field so they shared first place. Macen Lesbirel, Noah Walford, John Weir-Smith and Max Wides all were awarded player of the match in the 4 matches and John was also named as the player of the tournament. It is super to note that out of the 22 goals scored 8 different players in the team found the back of the net. It was a complete team effort, where they played with determination, followed the game plan, played for each other and showed remarkable skills. Well done to all of the boys! Please visit our Facebook page for more photos.
House News
There has been a lot of fun on campus as both Bramley and Charlton hosted very entertaining games evenings and Brooke held a fantastic drumming event. Many thanks to all the families who assisted and participated! We look forward to VDB's function on Monday. Please visit our Facebook page for more photos.
Guest Speaker fresh from the Olympic Games!
We were very fortunate to have Bronze Medal Olympian (SA 7’s), Tristan Leyds speak to the boys in Assembly this morning. The message was one of resilience, hard work and commitment. We had some great insightful questions from the boys.
