Dear Parents

UPDATE
The New Learning Commons building project at College is proceeding well and is still on target to be officially opened early in the third term. It will house the College library as well as a number of collaborative learning spaces and will no doubt be a real centre of creative learning for our Prep boys in their College years.

A new building project is about to commence that is very exciting for our rowers and all those who will row in years to come. We will be building a rowing training facility to allow for land training in a simulated rowing environment. As the Principal wrote in his newsletter last week, “We will be embarking on a long-awaited project of building a rowing training facility that will be constructed to allow for land-based training to take place in a simulated environment. This project has been the dream of many rowing committees at Bishops who have made an enormous effort to raise the funds needed for the project and we are delighted that plans have been approved and financing secured for it to start once the summer sports programme is completed.”

175
Next Friday we hold our whole school Founder’s Day Service on the hockey astro. All boys from Grade N to Matric will take part (1 438 boys), together with a staff complement of around 250. After that we will have our traditional inter-house tug-of-war, followed by our gala. The normal extra-mural programme follows in the afternoon.

A reminder about the stained glass windows designed for the Brooke Chapel. We have raised funds to complete one of the windows and are looking to parents and other donors to please donate so that we are able to commission the other two.  This will mean that every window in the Brooke Chapel will be stained glass, dedicated, and with a special meaning for the school. For more information, go the 175 tab on our website.

As part of the 175 celebrations, the College held its first ever Trilingual Public Speaking Competition, a real celebration of the three official languages of the Western Cape.

This has been a very busy ten days with a number of sports events on top of the general programme. Our 175 Quadrangular Athletics Meeting, the WPPS Annual Pentangular Athletics and two inter-schools galas.

At present our U13A water polo team is in Gqeberha for the Grey Junior Water Polo Tournament and we wish them a very successful and enjoyable time.

Kind regards

Outreach

As Easter approaches, we are excited to continue to support the boys and girls of St Paul's Primary School in Bo-Kaap and deliver a wonderful gift of Easter Eggs at the end of term! Boys are encouraged to bring a strip or box of marshmallow eggs during these last 3 weeks of term. Collection baskets are ready in the library, boys can hop on down and place their donation any morning before school or lunch break.

Lost Property

A pair of sunglasses was left behind at the Lenten Chapel Service last Thursday, probably by a Prep parent.  Please contact Renaté Swartz at the Front Office if they belong to you.
Second Hand Pop-Up
The Second Hand Shop will host a pop-up shop during second break on the 6th March from 12h30 for winter sports kit. Please send your son along to under the trees on Stanmore Field if they need new rugby and hockey kit (tops and blue shorts). Please check sizes at home for old kit beforehand. Items they’ve outgrown can be brought along too, or delivered to the front office beforehand, for resale.
NEWS
Athletics News

Our Pentangular athletes did us proud at Wynberg on Tuesday. We won 9 Gold, 4 Silver and 7 Bronze medals. Congratulations to these boys and well done to all our athletes who gave it everything on the day. HERE is the list of our medal winners.
Congratulations to Rafferty Mackenzie who broke the U8 80m record with a new time of 12,29 seconds.
There will be voluntary athletics practices next week, our final week of athletics this term.

Weekly Winners

The Artists of the Week were chosen from Grade 7. The boys are practising their line drawing skills and they drew Chameleons on prepared scraperboards. This medium lends itself to using lots of line textures like stippling and cross-hatching.
The following boys mastered their texturing skills very well:
7B: Joshua Fried, Drummond Mackenzie, Cameron Ranger and Noah Walford
7P: Daniel Grever, Likhanye Mpikashe, Troy Vomacka and Sebastijan Wierzycki
7S: Shafeeq Brinkhuis, Michael Pentz, Storm Silander and John Weir-Smith
Please click HERE to view all the artwork.

Weekly cricket awards: The Hershelle Gibbs Catch of the week award went to Phoenix Manolas for taking an outstanding catch at midwicket to break an important partnership. The Vince van der Bijl Bowling Performance of the Week award went to Matthew Ringwood for taking 8 wickets in the week, including a hat-trick. The Jonathan Bird Batting Performance of the Week award went to Max Menage for scoring a hundred not out during a very aggressive T20 knock. Well done, boys!

The Polo Panda winners for this week were the U13A Team. We wish them all the best for the Grey Junior Water Polo Tournament!

Music News

Our Wind Band performed three pieces at our Assembly concert: Mack the Knife, Star Wars & Eye of the Tiger. We also had six boys perform solo pieces:
Left to right: Max Corelli (announcer), Adam Khan (cornet), Noah Kihlstrand-Spencer (piano), Alex Breslin (piano), Minggu Xiao (piano)
Also: Sam Neethling (tuba), Thomas McCollum (clarinet). Well done to all!

Swimming News

We braved the heat on Wednesday afternoon for another exciting swimming gala. Bishops hosted our C League gala against Rondebosch, SACS, Western Province Prep School and Wynberg. Our boys were enthusiastic and swam so well. Both parents and teachers were very proud of them. Thanks to all those who came to support us!
