Dear Parents

ASCENSION DAY, THURSDAY 9 MAY 2024
We invite you all to join us for our Ascension Day Family Service at 11h00 in the Memorial Chapel. Next term we will all be doing 175 minutes of service on Mandela Day. A group of College boys will be supporting two soup kitchens so there will be a collection for these kitchens at next week’s service.
MOBILE DEVICES, ONLINE ISSUES AND KLIKD ….
iPads are an important and useful learning tool. However, their usage needs to be carefully managed at this age. We have a firewall that gives us twelve hourly reports on all usage on campus. In addition, boys only use our Wi-Fi – no sim cards or VPNs. They are only allowed the use of iPads with a teacher’s permission and under his/her supervision; no photographs or videos of anyone without their explicit permission; no recreational games; history must be maintained; and access has to be allowed for teachers and parents.
Introducing boys to the use of technology at Prep level enables us to also educate them around ethical usage, making the appropriate judgements online, research skills, fact checking and overall digital citizenship. For the last two years we have partnered with Klikd.
“Parenting dilemmas in the online world are real, leaving most of us too overwhelmed to make decisions that really serve our children. To exclude your child from online participation can feel like social suicide. To allow your child access to a smart device without boundaries and knowledge of what it is you are giving your child license to use, is potentially treacherous.
With new apps, explicit YouTube videos, addictive video games, often dangerous TikTok challenges, never has it been more challenging to be a parent.
Throw in Artificial Intelligence, with both its pros and cons, raising emotionally intelligent, critically thinking children has come to feel like an acquired skill set rather than a given. With screens here to stay, never has it been more important to upskill our children to be safe, responsible and happy online.”
Bishops is thrilled to be continuing its partnership with KLIKD, South Africa’s leading digital safety and digital citizenship company.  Founded by clinical psychologist Pam Tudin and social media lawyer Sarah Hoffman, Klikd brings a unique combined expertise and a fresh new approach to cyber safety education.
The Grade 5-7 boys will be having interactive lessons, starting this term at school using the Klikd App and Digital Citizenship Curriculum covering everything from online addiction, video gaming, Artificial Intelligence, cyberbullying and so much more.
Parents are also an integral part of the programme and are provided with regular updates and parenting resources for managing your child’s online world.
