Dear Parents
HEAD OF MUSIC
I am pleased to announce that Nikki Fyvie has been appointed as Head of Music subsequent to Stuart Scott’s retirement. She will take up the position in January 2025.
Nikki is well known as a part-time teacher with us for the last five years. She holds a Masters Degree in Music Performance and has been teaching music in the Eastern and Western Cape as well as the UK for the past 25 years. She has experience across the age groups including university level and was Head of Music at Collegiate Girls High School in Gqeberha for eight years before moving to Cape Town in 2018.
Nikki has a great zest for life and an unmistakable passion for music and we look forward to working with her in this role as Head of Music.
CAMPGROUND ROAD SUBWAY
The flooding of the subway has remained a major concern and inconvenience throughout the winter months with the very heavy rainfall that we have experienced. We were in almost daily contact with the City Council but had to accept that they had to put their energy and resources into areas which were completely flooded, including many homes. Subsequent to that, and over the last few weeks, the Council has pumped out the water five times. Left behind was a huge amount of polluted sludge which needed to be cleared before the submerged pump could be attended to and repaired. On each occasion, and very quickly, it rained again and consequently flooded the subway, meaning that the process had to be started again. Not only does most of the water on the Erin Road side walkways flow down into the subway and the drain in the middle, but there are a number of weepholes and, with the water table so high, water continues to flow into the subway.
Our City Councillor is very cognisant of this problem and organised a meeting on site of the various Council departments to assess and resolve the problem this past Monday. We will also meet with Council representatives to discuss a sustainable and long-term plan to mitigate against potentially high winter rainfalls such as we have experienced over the last two years.
175 EVENTS
We held a very successful 175 Chess Tournament last week and our 175 Cricket Festival (involving twelve schools from across the country) starts on Friday. In addition, we are more than halfway through our rehearsals for our 175 Interhouse Singing competition that takes place on Friday, 11 October.
Well done to our Chess team who were placed second in the Chess Tournament. We wish our 1st Cricket side well for the Festival, as well as the U13A Water Polo boys who will be participating in the SACS Water Polo Tournament in the 2nd week of the holidays.
Thank you for your support this term, driving your sons to and from rehearsals, concerts, practices and sports fixtures. It is always good to see so many parents at these events. It builds our community and our boys are fortunate to have this level of support from their parents.
School commences on Monday, 7 October and arrangements for the first week of next term appear below. Could you please ensure that your son has a neat school haircut for the start of term and the correct uniform for summer activities.
Enjoy the break.
Kind regards
GREG BROWN
