Dear Parents
BOOK WEEK AND BOOKS
This week the school is (extra-) alive with the appreciation of books and the love of reading and, in a first that I can remember, a House competition collecting books for the children of our Vusa Rugby and Learning Academy.
We are fortunate to have a truly wonderful and lived-in library at the centre of our Book Week. Book sales, competitions, talks about reading, reading character dress up, the Million Word Club and Spin the Wheel at Friday assembly, make up this special week.
Encouragement of reading, together with the resources and opportunities, creates a love of reading. Being able to read is essential with so much of what we need to know appearing in the written word; it is also the gateway to the wider world, whether it be history, economics or world affairs. Exposure to differing viewpoints increase our capacity for critical thinking and access to well-researched facts can increase our understanding of our world. In the fictional area, reading offers us the chance to encounter so many characters and lives different from our own, to feed our imaginations and take us to so many varied places, past, present and future. It increases our vocabulary, our knowledge and understanding of life, personalities and actions. It can provide relaxation, stimulation and fun as well as the chance to transport ourselves out of the here and now into a completely different and absorbing world. As someone who was schooled before the introduction of modern technologies, mobile devices, kindles and the like, I still enjoy holding a book, turning real pages and even the smell of books and libraries. I have heard of research being done in the neuro-cognitive field on the value of certain types of reading being better suited to hard copy than online, areas where deeper understanding or appreciation and involvement are required.
In the words of the inimitable Dr Seuss,
“The more you read, the more things you will know.
The more your learn, the more places to go.”
And for us adults,
“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild,
To pick up a book and read to a child”.
Happy reading!
Kind regards
GREG BROWN

Book Week |

|
The school has been a hive of activity during Book Week! We hosted the Lus vir Lees company who, though interactive plays in Afrikaans and English, introduced new books to all the grades. The boys may access the books in the library for a full read. The boys have also been enjoying the book sale and we have enjoyed seeing their enthusiasm for the books on offer! Book bingo was lots of fun and a big hit with everyone. The mountain of books that have been donated will ensure a fiercely-contested Interhouse Book Drive, the results of which will be posted soon. Well done to Miss de la Harpe for her co-ordination of this event and boundless enthusiasm for books and reading! We are looking forward to dress up day tomorrow, the final event of the week. Please visit our Facebook Page and Instagram pages for more photos. |

The Sneddon Brothers make their mark in Singapore
The 2025 Water Polo World Championships in Singapore proved to be a memorable tournament for South African water polo, with the Sneddon Brothers - Brett, Ryan, and Dean - playing pivotal roles in the national team's campaign. Competing against some of the world's strongest water polo nations, including Serbia, Romania, Italy, Australia, and hosts Singapore, the South African men's team faced formidable opposition throughout the tournament. However, the Sneddon family connection became a driving force for the team's offensive efforts.
Brett Sneddon scored five goals during the championship, while his brothers Ryan and Dean each contributed three goals apiece, demonstrating the family's collective talent and understanding of the game.
Remarkably, the three brothers accounted for 11 of South Africa's total 29 goals throughout the entire tournament - representing over one-third of the team's offensive output. This significant contribution highlighted not only their individual skills but also their crucial role in South Africa's World Championship campaign. |
