Dear Parents

9 000 BOOKS!
Well done to our boys in the Inter-House Book Collection competition who handed in 9 000 books in total, more than 20 books per boy. These books have all been taken to our VUSA Rugby and Learning Academy who will distribute them in the Langa schools and community. Thank you for supporting this drive; a wonderful way to end a fun-filled week of books and reading. The winning House was Brooke.

PUNCTUALITY AND CARRYING OUT INSTRUCTIONS
Currently we are working on improving and developing two behaviours in particular, namely punctuality and carrying out instructions.

The first, punctuality, involves changes to break bell times and setting time limits for changeover between lessons, arriving at class after break, etc: essentially raising our expectations and ensuring the requirements are met.

The carrying out instructions is a bit more difficult and will take a while to improve. This is a worldwide problem with children being used to instructions repeated many times and sometimes not carried out and the matter then left, sometimes with adults doing the task or action for their child. There are many reasons for this – the very busy life of many families, the predominant carer often not being the parent and the distraction of so many media that are easily available, the complete absorption that something on a screen provides; one that does not improve listening skills. I am showing my age when I mention that I grew up listening to a radio; missing a word or two could mean missing a scene or misunderstanding an aspect of the plot. I had to listen.

In addition, children are being raised and educated more gently than many past generations. This is much better in so many ways, but can go too far and not develop the responsibility and accountability our children need to master as they grow up.

In our busy lives and a busy school, the adults also need to slow down; make sure our boys are settled and can hear the instruction(s) and not give too many at once. And then have the expectation that they will be followed.

So many children struggle with executive functioning these days: time management and active listening are two key components that enable us to execute tasks in a structured and manageable way, completing them and in time.

Punctuality and carrying out instructions are part of home and school education and, if we make our boys accountable for both, we will be doing them a real favour.

Best wishes

Kind regards

GREG BROWN

VUSA 24 Hour Cycle Challenge

Thank you to all the Prep teams who are working so hard to fundraise for the VUSA 24-Hour Cycle Challenge. We can’t wait to see you there!
This year’s programme is packed with fun: the live screening of the Springbok vs All Blacks game on Saturday morning, Virgin spin classes, live bands, magic shows, and our very first karaoke competition. Keep an eye on the event page for updates and key information.

If you can’t make it to the event, you can still support by choosing a team to support here: https://www.vusarugbyacademy.com/vusa24teams.
100% of the funds raised go directly into programmes and spaces we’re building in Langa. We’d love to take you out to see the progress made thanks to last year’s event so if you have a gap, please contact us at info@vusaacademy.org to arrange a visit to our little hub.

Enkosi Kakhulu for being such a special community and making this event possible.

O, the places we’ll go!  Thank you from everyone at VUSA

A heartfelt thank you to all the Bishops Prep families who so generously donated books to the VUSA library. We are certain that our new VUSA library will become a safe and special place for our children. Thank you to each of you who donated for opening the doors to magical worlds, characters, and adventures.
Please know that the adult books will be shared with senior citizen homes, and any duplicates and surplus will help stock a new library in Delft.

A special word of thanks goes to Chloe de la Harpe and Alison Larcome for leading this project, and to Jerome Wolfaardt, Sebastian Stemmett, and their hardworking teams for transporting the books to our new library in Langa.

The Artists of the Week were chosen from Grade 5.  They learnt about the Impressionists (who captured light in their paintings and used looser brushstrokes) and the Fauvist artists (who used bright colours, free from the realistic colours in nature.)
The following boys were chosen for their expressive paint and pastel exploration of trees. Please click HERE to view all the artwork.
