Dear Parents

Welcome back to the 3rd term. I hope you were able to join your boys in some relaxing times over the holidays.

Our Grade 7s spent eight days in KZN at the end of last term – a really wonderful experience playing sport, chess and music with three schools, being billeted out for two nights, visits to historical and natural history sites and three days at the Sugar Bay Adventure Camp.

I also joined the U13A rugby team for their participation in the Independent Schools Rugby Festival that took place in Makhanda. Boys, parents and coaches braved the extreme cold and enjoyed a great time over the three days. They won three out of their four games and played exciting and creative rugby, their style being commented on by many of the spectators. Their overall behaviour and conduct also ensured that they were strong ambassadors for Bishops.

Two weeks before the end of last term we held a Youth Day assembly. Explaining the events of 16 June 1976 in an appropriate way for nine to thirteen year olds is not simple. For many of them, imagining a society divided along racial lines, residentially, educationally, commercially and the like, is not easy. But, in trying to do some of that, we show them how precious what we have today in South Africa is, however imperfect it is. I found these very hopeful words on one of the Youth Day sites and they are very apt.

“We acknowledge our past, learn from it, and do better for each other.”

Youth Day is also a celebration of youth with all their exuberant energy and creativity and a clarion call for us, the adults, to do our very best for them, ensuring that they understand justice and equality, and that they are willing to stand up and speak out against the opposite. The Principal wrote about this in his newsletter last term, and I paraphrase, “We will be moving into a world that our youth will run. We want them to be ready for that world and to be good men, leading us all into what will hopefully be a happy, prosperous and peaceful future.”

Kind regards

Grade 4 Parent Talk, “Help! My child got an iPad - Empowering parents in the Digital Age”

Hitting the Digital Highway comes with controversy and questions. Pam Tudin, Cinical Psychologist and co-founder of KLIKD brings both the current thinking and research around when and more importantly, how to introduce devices to our children’s world:

  • Why introduce IPADS when the whole world is saying no to screens?
  • What is good digital nutrition?
  • What is social media and how is that different to compliment based online educational input?
  • What does being left behind mean in the digital age?
  • Understanding the displacement effect of screens?
  • Where does gaming fit into IPAD time?
  • What to delay and what to permit?
  • How to ensure we get the basics right
  • How we as parents can protect our children online - beyond parental controls and routers?

We encourage all Grade 4 Parents to attend this talk on Tuesday 29 July at 18h30 in Jagger Hall. After this talk, the Grade 4 teachers will give important details and information on how the iPad will be used in the classroom.

ODU News

On a beautiful evening at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha earlier this month, The Springboks took on The Azzuri in the 2nd and final test of the series. This fantastic occasion saw 2 ODs selected - Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu for the Boks and Ross Vintcent for the Italians - both of whom matriculated in 2020 from Founders. Ross started at number 8 for Italy and had a busy game with some explosive trademark ball carries, while Sacha came on from the bench in the 2nd half and assisted Mapimpi’s try in the corner. The two friends swapped jerseys after the game.
