Dear Parents
It has been an exceptionally busy and truly exciting week at Bishops. From the vibrant opening night of our school play Bugsy Malone to the flurry of sports fixtures and WCED Systemic Testing for Gr 3 and 6, the spirit of our school community has been on full display.
The week saw our boys participating in cricket matches, the Paarl Athletics meeting, water polo matches, tennis fixtures, and not one but two swimming galas. On top of all this, we also participated in the final of the General Knowledge Quiz. Thank you to all the boys, staff, and families who have supported every event with such enthusiasm. This sense of unity and encouragement makes Bishops a unique and remarkable school.
In the classroom, we continue to explore the wonderful opportunities that come with Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL). This approach encourages boys to ask questions, think critically, and explore ideas deeply rather than simply memorising facts. It also builds collaboration, creativity, and confidence — essential skills for lifelong learning. Through IBL, our boys learn how to problem-solve independently, communicate their ideas effectively, and develop curiosity about the world around them.
Mr. Brown spoke to the boys this week about the importance of following instructions carefully and being ready for lessons. These habits are key to success both in and out of the classroom.
Here are a few practical ways you can help at home:
- Encourage your son to prepare his school bag and uniform the night before so mornings run smoothly.
- Help him to follow simple multi-step instructions (for example, setting the table or packing sports gear).
- Provide opportunities for him to complete small household tasks independently — this builds responsibility and attention to detail.
- Set aside time for quiet reading or reflection, helping him to practise focus without distractions.
- Model good listening skills by maintaining eye contact and repeating key points when giving directions.
We have noticed the pile of lost property growing rapidly. Please assist us by ensuring that all items are clearly labelled, including sports equipment, blazers, shoes, and lunch boxes. Labelling makes it much easier for misplaced items to find their way home!
On the topic of lunch boxes — a gentle reminder about the importance of healthy eating. We will be monitoring lunch boxes more closely in the coming weeks. The amount of sugar in some products can be surprisingly high, and sugar overloads make it difficult for boys to maintain focus and calm energy levels throughout the day. Please try to include wholesome, balanced options such as fruit, whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of water.
Last night was the opening night of Bugsy Malone — and what a night it was! The old gym was transformed by Sally Duncan and her team into a magnificent “Speakeasy”, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience and performance. The cast, crew, and staff have worked tirelessly, and the result was nothing short of mind-blowing. If you haven’t secured your tickets yet, we strongly encourage you to do so. This is one show you do not want to miss!
Next week, we will be taking summer school photographs, so please ensure your son’s hair is neatly cut and he has the correct clothing on Tuesday.
Thank you once again for your ongoing support.
Kind regards
CHRIS GROOM
