THURSDAY 16 April 2026
Dear Parents

I have long held an appreciation for the concept of Commencement in higher education. More than a graduation ceremony, Commencement marks the close of one season and the beginning of another—an inauguration to civic duty, obligation, and service. In this ritualised act, young people are charged with the values and ideals to which all good societies aspire.

Gathered in the Memorial Chapel on Monday, and led by the Reverend Bengani, I experienced a sense of my own Commencement as my tenure as Headmaster began. I was struck by the beauty and ornateness of the Chapel—a place we are privileged to call our spiritual home—the grounding rhythms of Anglican liturgy, and voices raised in song. These are special gifts, and they speak quietly but powerfully to who we are.

The qualities of a good school are not always easy to articulate, precisely because they are often deeply felt and, at times, intangible. Bishops is such a school, and it is my privilege and joy to lead this community in the season ahead.
Thank you to everyone, and especially to the boys, for the very warm welcome. I look forward to our partnership and engagement as we continue shaping the school our boys deserve.

Please join me in welcoming Mrs Samantha Louw, Class Teacher in Grade 4P, to our Prep. We wish her a long and fulfilling tenure with us.

A very happy return to Luke Bowen in Grade 4P. I hope you enjoy being back at Bishops.

Best wishes to our Chess, Cross Country, and Rugby teams for their fixtures this week.

Kind regards

LESTER LALLA

RUGBY SEASON IS OPEN AND SO IS THE TUCK SHOP!

This weekend we kick off rugby season by hosting SACS at Lutgensvale.

The Tuck Shop, which is managed and run by the PA, will be “staffed” by volunteer Grade 4 and 7 parents. All other parents are welcome to sign up for a 30min slot - https://bishops.simplybook.me/v2/#book

The next home game is on 16 May and will be led by Grade 3 and Grade 6 parents.

The Grade with the most volunteers will “win” a civvies day so please show your support!

All proceeds generated at the Tuckshop are redirected through various PA initiatives that include the both in-school projects and external outreach projects, such as the feeding schemes at St Paul’s and Athwood Primary schools.

Second Hand Shop - We need your Gear!

Our Second Hand Uniform Shop continues to be a fantastic resource for our school community, supporting both sustainability and affordability.
As we move into the winter sports season, we are in need of additional stock, particularly: tracksuits, blazers, rugby and hockey tops.

A few helpful reminders:
Drop-offs are easy: You can leave your washed items at reception anytime.
Earn while you declutter: Did you know you can receive 60% of the sale proceeds credited back to your school account — just label your bag clearly with your son’s name and student code.
No label = donation
Nothing goes to waste: Unsold items are donated to charity.

The shop is run by a team of volunteer moms, and all proceeds support the school’s outreach initiatives.
Thank you for your continued support — every item makes a difference!

NEWS
A warm welcome to Mr Lalla

College Principal, Mr Reeler, introduced the boys to our new Headmaster, Mr Lester Lalla, during Monday’s Chapel service. We extend a warm welcome to Mr Lalla at Bishops Prep and look forward to this exciting new chapter for our school. We wish him every success during his tenure.

Music News

We enjoyed a fascinating music assembly this week. Barbara Kennedy, one of our cello teachers, together with Dr Bruce Copley, a musicologist, introduced the boys to a wide range of musical instruments. We listened to the didgeridoo, halo, shakers, swimming pool pipes, an irrigation pipe whistle, as well as the cello and piano. The highlight of the assembly was the demonstration of the acorn whistle and each boy receiving their own acorn!

Library News

Our reading mascot, Kevin the baby dragon, enjoyed some wonderful adventures last term. It is always a pleasure to see evidence of our boys enjoying reading in their spare time!
