Thank you for your support and consideration as we continue working to improve the drop-off and pick-up experience for everyone in our community. One of the values we share is Togetherness: acting in the best interests of our boys and of one another. I appreciate your commitment to our community norms and the consideration you show each day.

It is no secret that Wednesday mornings are a highlight of my week. They provide an opportunity for us to gather as a school, listen to individual and ensemble performances, and celebrate the talents, effort, and growth of our fellow brothers. As an audience, we applaud their incremental improvement, the hours of practice they have invested, and the courage they demonstrate in overcoming fear and performing before others.
A common reflection following these mornings is how fortunate our boys are to have access to such opportunities. It is a sentiment that is difficult to ignore.

The concept of privilege in our country is both complex and far-reaching. When approached poorly, it can give rise to feelings of guilt or self-loathing. So, what should our response be to the privilege we enjoy?

We must teach our boys to be grateful for the many opportunities available to them and for the individuals who teach, coach, mentor, guide, and lead them along the way.

We must teach them to finish what they start and to remain committed through to the end, whether that commitment is to a team, an activity, or an instrument.

And perhaps most importantly, we must help them understand that pressure is a privilege. Education, sport, and personal development will ask difficult things of them. The expectation to perform, to persevere, and to show up consistently is itself a privilege. As parents and educators, we should not be quick to rescue them from hard things, but rather support them in developing the resilience, character, and confidence that come from overcoming challenge.

We can do hard things!
