THURSDAY 12 February 2026
Dear Parents

This week has been an exciting one for our Grade 4, 5 and 6 boys, who have been away enjoying their school camps. Camps offer far more than just fun and adventure — they provide valuable opportunities for boys to develop independence, resilience and teamwork, while building friendships and confidence outside the classroom. Experiences such as problem-solving, shared responsibility and stepping outside their comfort zones play an important role in shaping well-rounded young men.

Our Grade 7 boys have also had a meaningful week, enjoying an outing to Strandfontein Beach to do a beach clean-up, in addition to attending the Growing Good Men workshop presented by Mr Reeler. The sessions focused on leadership, personal responsibility, healthy choices and character development, equipping the boys with practical tools to navigate adolescence with confidence and integrity. They also began their Conflict Mediation training, learning practical strategies to listen, de-escalate situations and help peers resolve disagreements respectfully. The Grade 7 and Grade 3 boys will tomorrow spend valuable mentorship time together, strengthening relationships across the grades and allowing our seniors to practise positive leadership with their younger buddies.

A reminder that Monday is a Bishops school holiday. This is a well-earned rest for our boys, staff and parents after a very busy start to the term with fixtures, camps, evening events and many co‑curricular activities. Enjoy the half-term break so that we can all recharge for the second half of Term 1.

Ramadaan Mubarak. Wishing all our Muslim families well over the fast.

Kind regards

Prep Chapel Reflection – Matthew 5:13

“Be the Right Kind of Salt”

Dear Bishops Prep Community,

This week in Chapel, we reflected on a simple yet deeply meaningful verse from Matthew 5:13: “You are the salt of the earth.” Jesus does not say, “You might become salt one day,” or “Try hard to be salt.”
He says, “You are.” To bring this to life for the boys, we used a practical illustration — three bowls of popcorn.

  1. One bowl had no salt at all.
  2. One was seasoned just right.
  3. One had far too much salt.

Two brave volunteers tasted each bowl without knowing which was which. The reactions were honest and immediate. The first bowl tasted bland. The third was overwhelming. But the second, seasoned just right, was balanced and enjoyable.

The lesson was clear: salt is small, yet powerful. You can hardly see it. It does not draw attention to itself. Yet without it, something is missing. Too much of it is overwhelming. But just the right amount quietly changes everything.

What Does This Mean for Our Boys?

Being “the right kind of salt” at Prep does not mean being loud, dominant, or always in the spotlight. It means understanding that small, everyday choices shape the atmosphere around us. It looks like:

  1. Including someone who feels left out
  2. Speaking respectfully
  3. Showing humility in victory and grace in defeat
  4. Doing the right thing even when it is difficult
  5. Being consistent in character when no one is watching

These actions may seem small, but they are powerful. They shape classrooms, sports teams, friendships, and ultimately the culture of our school.

A Word to Our Parents

Formation happens in partnership. The conversations you have at home about fairness, kindness, perseverance, and integrity reinforce what is nurtured at school. When home and school are aligned, boys grow not only in confidence, but in depth of character. Our hope is not simply to raise successful boys, instead we want to raise good young men who understand that true influence is steady, not "showy". We want all our boys to make a difference not by volume, but by values and to be true to who they are.

A Question for the Week

We encouraged the boys to ask themselves: “Am I being the right kind of salt?” It is a simple question but a powerful one.

Thank you for your continued partnership and trust. Together, we continue shaping boys of character, one small but powerful choice at a time.

With gratitude,

The Revd. Khwezi Bengani

The video above speaks to something deeply familiar in South Africa. The need for safe spaces. For places where children are seen, supported and given room to grow.

At VUSA, rugby is often the entry point. It is what draws children in and gives them a sense of belonging, but once they arrive, they are met with far more than a game. They step into structured afternoons that include academic support through programmes like Reading Eggs, Code4Kids and Matific, a reliable daily meal, caring coaches and teachers, and opportunities to play, learn and experience the world beyond what they know.

For 1,300 children, these programmes matter. They shape confidence, routine and motivation. They create space for learning, growth and hope.

As the financial year comes to an end, a reminder that donations to VUSA are eligible for a Section 18A tax certificate. Contributions can be made monthly or as a once-off, and every donation helps keep these safe spaces open.

Science in Action!
Our Grade 5s turned up the heat in the Science Lab this week! They conducted an exciting boiling water experiment, carefully watched the temperature rise, and learned how to read a thermometer like real young scientists. After gathering their data, they transformed it into a line graph—because science is all about asking questions and understanding the numbers.

Grade 7 News

The Grade 7s caught the train from Rondebosch to Muizenberg yesterday. They then did a beach walk and clean up from Muizenberg to Strandfontein, then back to Muizenberg for a long swim and cool-off. Please visit our Facebook page for more photos.
