Dear Parents

Welcome to Term Three. It is wonderful to have the boys and staff back after a well-deserved winter holiday.

We extend a warm welcome back to Mrs Sandee Clapperton, who has returned this term from long leave.

Podcasting is a profound cultural phenomenon of our time and, when meeting new people, I am always interested to learn about their favourite podcasts. In my humble opinion, those produced by The New York Times are often best in class, although they too have biases.

Chris Williamson's Modern Wisdom frequently profiles some of the most insightful thinkers of our time. In a recent episode, he spoke about "unteachable lessons" - the lessons in life that can only be gained through hard-earned experience. Mr Groom has his own well-known adage for this: You can buy chips and Coke, but you can't buy experience.

The application of this wisdom is inexhaustible.

In the context of raising young boys to be independent and responsible, there are both teachable and unteachable lessons. Schools, by their very nature, provide the conditions for these lessons to be experienced and for boys to earn this wisdom for themselves.

While the temptation to rescue our sons from the consequences of forgetfulness or a lack of preparation is a natural parental response, doing so may deprive them of the opportunity to develop responsibility, resilience, and a genuine sense of accomplishment.

Following the successful introduction of our new approach in the first term, we have noticed a growing number of items being dropped off at reception during the course of the school day.

Unless an item is deemed critical, we will no longer accept items at reception for delivery to boys during the school day.

Responsibility is a skill that is learnt through both instruction and experience.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Please note that Mrs Renate Swartz will be on leave from 29 July to 31 July. Please contact reception telephonically should you have any urgent queries during this period.

Best wishes for a successful and rewarding term ahead.

Kind regards

Chapel Reflection - A Strong Start to Term 3

A new term always brings new opportunities to learn, to grow and to become more of the people God has created us to be.

In chapel this week, we reflected on the Armour of God from Ephesians 6. Just as armour protects a soldier, God gives us everything we need to face each day with courage, wisdom, kindness, and faith. Whether we are in the classroom, on the sports field, performing on stage or supporting a friend, we are never alone. God is with us every step of the way.

As we begin this term, my hope is that every boy will know that true strength is found in choosing what is right, showing kindness to others and having the courage to stand up for what is good. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow stronger in character and faith.

May this be a term filled with purpose, joy and perseverance as we encourage one another to live with integrity and to reflect God’s love in all that we do.

“Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” Ephesians 6:10

NEWS
Rugby News
The U13A rugby team enjoyed a very successful Independent Schools Rugby Festival hosted by St David’s in Johannesburg. The boys had to dig deep and show incredible heart, character and a resilient attitude to come away from the festival unbeaten. It was a special tour marking the end of Mr Chris Groom’s rugby touring career. The boys certainly gave him a dream send off. A huge thanks to the teachers involved and to all the parents who travelled up to support their boys. There were some special memories made that will last for many years to come!
