Dear Parents

Parenting, like teaching, is an emotionally expensive endeavour. Each a vocation in its own right. They both demand giving of ourselves, always being the adult, and constantly reframing situations.

I recently heard a psychologist describe a moment in which a teacher had to “loan his frontal cortex” to a nine year old in his class. It’s a novel way to think about the hundreds of mediated moments that occur daily in school life.

It is, in many ways, a privilege to inhabit this space. It is a place filled with awe and wonder, where the novel and the mundane sit side by side; where we witness highs and lows, regulation and dysregulation, joy and sadness, victory and defeat.

Virginia Woolf once described childhood as “that great cathedral space,” and this image has stayed with me.

I was reminded of it again as I observed the interaction captured in the photograph above -experienced, wise adults creating moments, holding space, and quietly helping to build those cathedrals.

In our complex world, many factors compete for this important phase in the lives of our boys -one of which is excessive gaming. As a staff, we are concerned by the growing number of boys exposed to gaming that is both excessive and not age-appropriate. We strongly encourage all families to review and, where necessary, adjust the boundaries and expectations around gaming at home.

Thank you for your generous support of the clothing drive in aid of charity.

Kind regards
