Dear Parents
As we move steadily through a full and vibrant term, we pause to acknowledge the wonderful support of our parents. Whether it is early morning drop-offs for practices, long hours on the boundary at cricket matches, cheering beside the pool at water polo, attending Chapel services, supporting House functions, working tirelessly in the tuckshop, volunteering as a class rep, managing the second-hand clothing shop, hosting incoming touring teams, or embracing school initiatives aimed at developing life skills, your presence matters. It makes a huge difference.
I'd like to welcome Mrs Gillian Gous, our new ICT Manager and Curriculum Integrator, to the Bishops family. Her presence and expertise have already been felt and we look forward to many new innovations and rich learning experiences that will further enhance teaching and learning at the Prep.
A big word of thanks must go to our PA, who identified a need around the safety of our boys who cycle to school and helped to put a practical solution in place. Boys are now able to park their bicycles safely at the College and then walk under the subway, meaning they no longer have to navigate the busy roads around the Prep on their bikes. This small change has made a significant difference to the safety and wellbeing of our boys and we are most grateful.
On the sports fields and around the pool, your encouragement has been noticed and deeply appreciated. The positive tone you set on the sidelines teaches more than you may realise. As the saying goes, “Children learn more from what you are than what you teach.”
We know that in sport, as in life, we sometimes take a loss. Results do not always go our way. Yet we must always hold the bigger picture in mind: we use sport to educate for life. The sports field is, in many ways, an outdoor classroom. Here boys learn resilience, humility, teamwork, courage and how to deal with pressure. As Nelson Mandela wisely said, “Sport has the power to change the world.” It certainly has the power to shape character.
Losing, being moved to another team or being run out/bowled out for 0 is never pleasant; however, it is often the perfect learning opportunity and a space for meaningful conversations between boys, coaches and parents. Rarely do we go back and reflect deeply after a comfortable win, but after disappointment comes growth. They remind us that effort, attitude and improvement matter more than the scoreboard.
We are grateful that, overwhelmingly, our parents understand and embrace this philosophy. Your positive attitude reinforces that we value development over dominance and character over trophies.
Looking ahead, rugby and hockey pre-season training begins on 9 March and will continue until the end of term. We are excited for what lies ahead as boys prepare for new challenges, fresh opportunities and continued growth.
Thank you for walking this journey with us. Your partnership strengthens our community and enriches the experience of every boy.
Kind regards
CHRIS GROOM
