FRIDAY 12 July 2024

Dear Parents

Welcome back to a very chilly term 3. It was so exciting to see our boys return and unbelievable to notice how much they have grown in 3 weeks!
As we approach Mandela Day, we are filled with a sense of purpose and community spirit, inspired by the legacy of Nelson Mandela. This special day, celebrated on July 18th, serves as a reminder of the values that Mandela stood for, equality, justice, and the power of community service.

Assembly Recap: Learning About Nelson Mandela
At the end of last term, the boys were introduced to Nelson Mandela and the concept of Mandela Day as well as an introduction to how we would be celebrating. This week, we held a special assembly to educate our boys about who Nelson Mandela was and why we celebrate this important day. Through stories and discussions, the children learned about Mandela's remarkable journey and his contributions to South Africa, and we discussed how his kindness changed South Africa and how we can learn from his lessons and apply them every day at school.

Grade Activities for Mandela Day
Each grade at Bishops will be celebrating Mandela Day in a unique and meaningful way. Here are the plans for each grade:

Grade N and R:
We are excited to welcome the Volunteer Fire Services to our school. The firefighters will speak to the children about their work and the importance of community service. Additionally, we are organising a voluntary monetary donation to help purchase a new fire uniform for the new recruits, each uniform costs R7500. This is a wonderful opportunity for our youngest students to learn about the importance of giving back.

Grade 1:
Our Grade 1 boys will spend time at a local old age home, the Helen Keller Society in Pinelands. The boys will engage with the residents, performing songs and making bracelets with them. They will also be making sandwiches to donate to those in need. This activity not only fosters a sense of compassion and empathy but also teaches the children the joy of giving.

Grade 2:
The Grade 2 boys have invited 75 children from the Vusa Learning Academy, a society dedicated to supporting underprivileged youth in Langa. A day full of fun and educational activities has been planned, ensuring that our boys and their guests have a memorable and enriching experience. To ensure our guests feel welcome, we request that each boy brings a replica of his lunch (a sandwich and a fruit) to share with their buddy. The Grade 2 boys must come dressed in their whites. The event will take place during normal school hours and afternoon sports will continue as usual. This gesture will teach our boys the value of sharing and generosity, and will highlight the importance of inclusivity and community building.

Getting Involved
We encourage all our parents to support these initiatives and discuss the significance of Mandela Day with your children. Together, we can instil the values of kindness, generosity, and community service in the next generation.
Thank you for your continued support and for helping us make Mandela Day a meaningful and impactful event for our boys.

Happy birthday to Mrs Band for 16 June, Mrs van Zyl for 5 July, Ms Tandwa for 8 July, Mrs Green for 10 July, Ms Paul for 16 July and Mrs Durham for 18 July.

Kind regards

PRE-PREP PRAYER GROUP
Message from Mr Tsotso

The Lord be with you.

Welcome back to all our students, parents, and staff! We hope everyone had a restful and rejuvenating break. As we step into Term 3, let's embrace the new opportunities with courage and grace. Together, we can make this term filled with learning, growth, and joy.

Let us pray.
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for bringing us together safely after our break. As we begin this new term, we ask for your guidance, strength, and wisdom to embrace every challenge with courage and every success with grace.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer
Father, we praise you for the holidays which are now over and for all the happiness we have enjoyed. At the beginning of this term, we present ourselves for your blessings, make us loyal and unselfish in our dealing with one another further helping us in our work and games to reflect you and do our best.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer
God it is you that can bring good out of our evil and make the wrath of man into praise. Please teach us to live in charity and peace, asking that all the nations of the world be united in a firmer fellowship of your glory and goodness for the sake of all mankind.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer
We acknowledge the recent storms and heavy rains in Cape Town. What may be a blessing to some can bring chaos and hardship to others. We lift those who have been severely affected by the weather, especially those with damaged homes, injured loved ones, and disrupted lives. Grant them comfort, healing, and the necessary support to rebuild and recover.
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer

Bless our community and keep us safe and united. In Your holy name, we pray.
Amen.

HIGHLIGHTS
Grade 2

It's been so lovely having the boys back in class, albeit for three days this week. The Grade 2 boys wrapped term 2 up with a flurry of exciting activities. They were allowed to bring their desk pets to school and the classrooms were filled with fluffy and well-behaved desk pets. The boy's sprinted, dodged, and laughed their way through a lively Tag tournament displaying teamwork and sportsmanship. The talented storyteller Gilly Southwood visited our school, captivating the boys with her magical tales. Lastly, the boys cooled off with colourful ice lollies after a fun soccer lesson . A perfect way to bid farewell to the term! The Grade 2 boys showed resilience, creativity, and boundless energy. We can’t wait for the adventures that await us this term!

Grade 1

Welcome back to Term 3! The boys ended Term 2 with football fever and a lovely soccer party. They created lovely soccer posters and enjoyed a game of pass the parcel. We dived into Term 3 with cold and wet weather and started by writing our holiday news. We have read all about their exciting adventures. The Grade 1s are exploring the topic of cows and using our project-based learning to explore this topic. We look forward to a fun filled term packed with new adventures and memories to last a lifetime.

Grade R

We are thrilled to welcome back all the boys and hear about their wonderful holidays. The term has been off to an icy start, bringing plenty of rainfall and chilly mornings. Despite the cold, the boys have returned with enthusiasm and energy. This term, we are celebrating 100 days at school! To mark this milestone, we have been engaging in various activities centred around the number 100. The boys have enjoyed these activities immensely, and it's been a fantastic way to reinforce their learning in a fun and creative manner. We look forward to an exciting Term 3!

Grade N

A warm welcome back to our Grade N boys. We hope you had lots of fun in the holidays! We ended off last term celebrating many June birthdays. The boys  all made wonderful appreciation cards/notes for Mrs Stuart, Mr Julius (our intern who is moving to Grade R for the 3rd and 4th Term) and our Mrs Gedu. We were also very busy making Father’s Day gifts for our dads and we hope our dads had a special day on the 16th June. Our boys loved our Cape Town theme. We looked at many experiences and food that make our city so special. Our boys also loved making peppermint crisp tarts in the art room. In our last week of term 2, Gilly Southwood entertained our boys with her magnificent story telling skills and shared stories from A Mixed Bag of Tales. The boys were enthralled by her special talents and listened beautifully. We are so excited to explore and discover our new themes through playing and fun throughout this term.
