FRIDAY 04 November 2022

Dear Parents

There is so much happening "behind the scenes" in preparation for all the exciting events coming up in the next few weeks.  Our boys have filled the halls with carols and isiXhosa songs, instrumentals and much chatter and our parents have joined the excitement by decorating our foyer and passages with Christmas decor.  Thank you to those parents who offered their time, we are immensely grateful for your help!  The Grade 2 boys are extremely excited by the commencement of the revamp of their jungle gym. After watching the Grade 1 area transform into an adventure wonderland, they now have an opportunity to watch their area be developed and will have a chance to enjoy the structure before moving on to the Prep school. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend as we head into week 5 of the term next week.

Kind regards

GENERAL INFO
Remembrance Day 11/11 - an extract from a message from Mr Reeler

Signs, Symbols and Significance Signs and symbols can represent places, concepts or serve as an outward picture for a tradition or belief. The most obvious is a symbol such as a cross which represents the Christian faith or the Mitre which represents Bishops. Soon, we will be acknowledging Remembrance Day, traditionally associated with the ending of World War I at 11:00 on the 11th day of the 11th month. While this service is held throughout much of the world as a mark of respect and acknowledgement of those who passed away in these two wars, it is also a time to remember others who have passed – whether it is in time of conflict or any other reason. To use this time as a time of remembrance makes the occasion relevant to us today. At Bishops not only do we have plaques that remember those ODs who died in WWI and WWII but we have also put up a plaque that acknowledges all those who died in time of conflict, without judgement for what they gave their lives for. We will have 256 small white crosses planted on the Chapel lawn to represent each of the ODs who passed in those two wars. During the service, the bell will chime 11 times at 11:00 to mark the end of conflict, followed by the playing of a piece of music called the Last Post. This was an army tradition that at the end of the day, a lone bugler would play to indicate that the day was over. A minute’s silence is observed during which we stand quietly in contemplation of significance of the day and give thought to those who passed or who we have personally lost in our own lives. This is followed by another trumpet piece, the Reveille, which also comes from army days and was the wake-up call played first thing in the mornings. The significance of these two pieces, in this order, is the symbolism of the end of the day for those who have passed yet the beginning of a new day for those who remain behind. The piper’s lament is played while wreaths are laid – one at the memorial at the theatre and one at the chapel and a set of flags, the SA flag and the Bishops flag at our new plaque. The symbolism of the flags is to acknowledge both our school but also our country while the wreaths, made of real flowers, will perish and fade over the next few weeks – also symbolically.
HIGHLIGHTS
Grade 2

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Grade 2. Our boys drew the most beautiful angels and stars during their Art lesson. Mrs Daames’ class was grateful to have a sunny day on Tuesday and enjoyed a class swimming lesson at the Prep pool. The boys participated so enthusiastically and are really working hard to improve their strokes. But I think that our highlight for this week was finding some Grade 9 boys having fun in the Grade 2 sandpit. These boys had learned about landforms in their geography lesson and our sandpit was the ideal place for them to complete the practical component of their lesson. It just goes to show that you are never too old to learn or to enjoy playing in the sandpit.

Grade 1

This week the Grade 1’s became detectives and investigated the mystery behind a mysterious missing bike. They used their Sam Sleuth question words to ask some very important questions. We also discovered that all our clues contained magic ‘e’ words. We also visited Rosen Castle and explored different careers. We had the opportunity to role play different occupations and real-life situations.

Grade R

What a busy and fact filled two weeks we have had with our Castle theme!  Our boys learnt about Heraldry, Knighthood and Medieval times; and more interestingly, how there was no running water, windows hadn’t been invented yet, and no electricity! “Well we might as well be knights Mrs van Zyl, the loadshedding!” Truer words were never spoken.  This week we also explored symmetry, used beans to create castles, and counted in 2’s to 20 using Numicon with manipulatives.  Outside, the boys took their exploration of weight and measurement to new levels, creating their own scale out of the wooden equipment! So resourceful! Bravo, boys!

Grade N

The Grade N's had a hands-on week with much discovering and predicting whilst exploring the theme of experiments. Some of the experiments covered were floating drawings, dancing rice, mixing colours and candle in a jar. We ended off the week with a wonderful corn starch activity in the garden. Hopefully you are all being sung to continuously as we prepare for our nativity concert on the 25th November. Have a wonderful weekend.
