Dear Parents

To say this has been a whirlwind of a week would be telling the truth. Both physically and figuratively, we have literally survived a flurry of activity. The weather has not been terribly kind these last two days but we are grateful to have had lovely weather for our function on Wednesday. Our Spring picnic was not able to be outside in the sunshine but was enjoyed by all, nevertheless. To all those Grandparents and Special guests that took the time to visit us, an enormous thank you. We do hope that you enjoyed the day with us and that you have been able to have a little ‘peep’ into our day at school. The boys were delighted to welcome you - on their behalf, THANK YOU! Character Day is still a big winner, as the boys told me today that we must never stop having this day! The older grades enjoyed the reading bingo and they also loved having visiting readers in their classes which was rather fun. If you would still like to contribute to our secondhand book collection, please feel free to send along books until the end of next week. I will communicate in the upcoming newsletters where they will be distributed. As we welcome this month of September and celebrate the start of Spring, we wish you a restful weekend ahead. Please keep an eye on the calendar for many exciting events that are happening in the weeks ahead.

A huge thank you to each and every parent, teacher and assistant who contributed to the success of this past week.  It really does take teamwork to make a week like this run smoothly.
Kind regards

PRE-PREP PRAYER GROUP
Message from our Youth Pastor

The Lord be with you
This has been a remarkably moving and significant week in the life of the school. I have had the privilege of being part of several services with the staff and the young boys of Bishops. These services took place at an important time in the history of the school as this week also marked 150 years since the passing of the schools’ founder, Robert Gray.
As we celebrated and were grateful for the life of our founder, we also had a Family Service that was hosted by the staff and our boys. They did a beautiful skit on the calling of Samuel who later on in his life become a judge, priest and prophet. Through this we were reminded of the calling laid upon Robert Gray's heart as well as the many things that God may be calling us to at such a time as this. God has given each of us gifts and calls us to receive them with humility and to allow Him to lead us into what we have sacredly been ordained to.
As God calls, let us open our hearts and minds to His powerful and loving voice and be vested with courage to accept his will despite our individual plans.
Let us pray
God, I ask that you reveal our calling to us. Show us who we need to serve, how we need to serve them, and why you need us to serve them in this way.
Help us to accept the empowering love of the Holy Spirit in your calling to us. Help us, Lord, to hear your voice in the cries of the world and to affirm our faithful response to your eternal love: speak, O Lord, for your servant is listening. Amen

GENERAL INFO
PA  AGM

Thank you to those of you who attended Wednesday night’s online AGM. The following six parents were nominated and will now form the new Committee for the following year: Nida Hendrickse, Mkhuseli Lujabe, Fika Madubela, Shanita Sam, Nivi Singh, Karine Young. I do wish to thank the outgoing Committee: Ettie Chahwahwa, David Dalling, Nida Hendrickse, Zanne Horrell, Brian Khoury, Mkhuseli Lujabe, Delene Mark, Daniela Wakeford. Delene Mark, Ettie Chahwahwa and Daniela Wakeford have all served for three years. The Committee takes the lead in the rugby tuckshop every Saturday but they have also done major work in outreach with St Paul’s and Athwood Primary schools as well as VUSA, both in financial terms and actual connection with them. And this continued during the Covid lockdown. If you look across the Avenue fields you will see the “huge” new jungle gym, that the Grade 1s are excitably enjoying and experiencing every day, complete with a new astro surface. When the Rossall precinct is complete, we will have a special commemorative bench dedicated to Archbishops Desmond Tutu’s legacy and every boy is painting a tile that will clad it: all thanks to fund-raising. The Committee has often brought issues from yourselves to us and has been a useful sounding board for the school. An enormous thanks to those who served on the Committee this year.

Readathon

What a fun and exciting week we have had, filled with the magic of reading! In Grade 2 the boys have been READING, READING, READING! In all places comfortable. The Bingo challenge was on from day one and most boys had ticked off at least 4 boxes by the time Monday was over. The Grade 1 boys shared their topsy turvy Lorax tales for all to read in their beautiful walkway display. The boys all loved having some special guests come in and read to them, including some matric boys and Mr Reeler. Thanks so much for sharing some exciting stories with us.  The Mad Hatters picnic was enjoyed by all in grade 1 and 2 while the grade N and R’s enjoyed their picnic with their Teddy Bears! We ended our week wearing our favourite book character and fairy tale costumes. Wow, a jam-packed week celebrating Fairy Tales and our love of READING!

Character Day
The boys had great fun dressing up as their favourite book character as part of our Readathon week.
