DONOR APPRECIATION EVENING

12 February 2019
Having reached the R50 million milestone in the 175 Campaign, we thought we would celebrate with the special people who helped us to get there.  On Tuesday evening, with Cape Town offering her finest south easter and Eskom providing the 'ambience' we did just that.  Moshe Apleni, as always, spoke eloquently about Cape Town's economic divide and how a Bishops education really does open doors for boys from impoverished communities.  In order to offer our boys the best education, our facilities and syllabus must accommodate learning for a different world; Greg Brown thus took us on the tour of the first Capital Project of the 175 Campaign; The Prep Library and Learning Centre (see below more more info) A great evening, spent with a splendid group of people.

PREP LIBRARY UPDATE...

While the Bishops community (hopefully) enjoyed the December holiday, our builders have made steady progress on the first project of the  175 Campaign; The Prep Library and Learning Centre is a vital addition to the campus and will transform the way our children view the library.

This centre will be utilised for lessons which are geared at empowering our children to use the library for  research and to develop a love for reading combined with the skills to read with understanding.

We simply cannot wait to introduce the boys to this new hub of learning and exploration.

FOUNDATIONS FOR THE FUTURE -
THE MULTIFUNCTIONAL CENTRE

With the Prep Library project well underway, we start to look forward to the next Capital Project; The Multifunctional Centre.  In terms of infrastructure, Bishops must look ahead so as not to fall behind other leading schools in South Africa and in order to proceed systematically, this must be the next project we tackle.

The existing Mallet Centre is problematic for a number of reasons and expansion in its current location is not feasible. Expansion is needed for all programs associated with the Mallett Centre. Such space cannot be found on site and it is for this reason that the decision has been taken to relocate the centre, thereby making additional space for much needed classrooms in the academic block.

This multifunctional  centre will be positioned near the Riverton Road entrance and will:
  • Accommodate basketball, squash, indoor hockey, fencing, climbing, change rooms and a dedicated gym;
  • The gym will be built to function independently of the sports hall so that access to the gym will not be restricted when the sports centre is in use;
  • This centre will also function as an events venue and will be large enough to house parents and pupils together and will be the planned venue for major school events such as the annual Prize Giving, Valedictory and Matric Dances.
  • The new centre will be built around the existing tennis courts with a pavilion to accommodate court-side tennis requirements.
Erecting this building will allow for the demolition of the existing Mallett Centre, which will then create space for additional classrooms to be built. The name of the ‘Mallett Centre’ is planned to be used for one of the new buildings to be built as part of the 175 Campaign and therefore naming rights for this building are open, subject to conditions.

We appeal to all members of the Bishops Community to contribute what is affordable in order to transform this space into one that will accommodate the boys' needs for years to come.

BURSARIES

As can be seen in the pie chart above, the Bursary Fund is growing from strength to strength with additional named funds having being established by parents and ODs who wish to create a lasting legacy.

We still require benefactors to support the Extra Term Initiative for 2019.  This programme sees a donor contributing one term's fees annually, to allow a boy from a disadvantaged community to benefit from a Bishops education.   It allows for involvement beyond pure financial needs and has been tailored to cultivate a personal relationship between donor and beneficiary, if desired.

The boys who are selected display sport, cultural and academic talents and a Bishops education would provide them with opportunities that would ordinarily be inaccessible to them.

The mentorship relationship is voluntary but allows the donors to follow and positively guide the boys throughout their time at College.  The beneficiary will provide written updates to their donors and the school will provide the donors with access to the boys’ academic records.  A meeting is held between the school, donors and beneficiary family to establish guidelines, and the donors can determine the level of involvement they would like to have in the process.

We ask that donors who sign up to this initiative commit to the full five years of the boy’s Bishops career.

For more information on the Extra Term Initiative, please see HERE or contact Nikki Matthews at the Bishops Trust Office.

“A CHERISHED OPPORTUNITY TO FLY" BRIAN HUNA

Bishops Aviation Experience

Brian and Thobeka Huna

"Inspires Individuals” is not just the tag line for this magnificent institution - it is actually lived by all who are affected by the school.

One such poignant example is the "Bishops Aviation Experience”, where boys who are interested in aviation went on the experience of a lifetime with ODs who are in the aviation industry.  One such OD was Capt. Brian Huna (1995F) who took two Bishops boys on a flight from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and back to Cape Town in a S.A. Express Airways De Havilland Q400. They were exposed to pre-flight preparation and were also invited to sit up front in the cockpit with Brian.

Brian Huna is a former recipient of the Hamilton Mvelase Scholarship, he matriculated from Bishops in 1995 Founders House, and was a school prefect.
In 1997 he and his friends went to France to participate in the Nancy Jazz Festival in a marimba band. That was his first flying experience and they were lucky to be invited to view the flight deck of 747-400 in flight. That's when his interest in flying began.

He then applied for and was selected for the SAA cadet system in 2002 (SAA group 12) and was part of the first group to complete their training at 43 Air School in Port Alfred.
Brian is a proud OD, and plays a leading role in the “Black OD’s” movement which acknowledges that Black Old boys were not as involved in the OD Union and Bishops compared to their White counterparts. It is therefore incumbent on these Black OD’s to lend a hand in providing role models for other Bishops Boys who may have never met a Black Pilot.
                                                                                                                             “The penny sometimes only drops later in life, and the real benefit of Bishops is only recognised then, however I can certainly say without a doubt that the strength I needed to make it in life was harnessed at Bishops. Making the 1st XV rugby team against the better well known kids at school and the friendships built over the years have been critical” ,  says Brian. “Without the foundation and the opportunity of the scholarship, I don’t think I would be where I am today."

I cherish the critical relationships I have built with the likes of Thobile Vumazonke, Kk Mhlauli and, more recently, OD pilots Mike Bosman and Paul Weich- It was at an OD Dinner that we discussed the Aviation experience”.

In March 2009 Brian joined SA Express as a First Officer on the Canadair Regional Jet CRJ200 and in 2012 he did his conversion onto the CRJ700. He flew as First Officer for seven years and received his upgrade to Dash 8 Q400 Captain in July 2016. He has now been on the Q400 for his third year of command with over 7000 flying hours under his belt.

Brian is married to Thobeka. She's a cabin crew member at SAA and they have two boys Olwethu and Thami, both 13, and 3 year old Sethu, a little girl.
