Dear Parents

“The Pessimist complains about the wind, the Optimist expects it to change and the Realist adjusts his sails” - Anon

I hope you enjoyed a wonderful Easter holiday with your families.  The 2nd term is always a very challenging term as we engage in our winter sports programme, mid year exams and the Eisteddfod.

During the holidays many of our boys were involved in various events and festivals and achieved exceptional results:

  • Bishops hosted the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships. There were five Bishops boys representing South Africa and they did fantastically well; John van Niekerk was the champion After Dinner speaker and Nicholas Peile came 3rd in the Persuasive Speaking and 7th overall. There were 170 competitors from eleven different countries and the response from delegates was that it was the best championship that they had attended. Congratulations to the entire team from Bishops who organised this event, headed up by John Holtman, Rosemary Wilke and Mark Mitchell.
  • Michael Houlie did us proud in the Commonwealth Games, reaching two individual finals and the relay final.
  • Several of our rugby and hockey teams participated in festivals during the holidays and performed very well, a very promising start to the season.

As we look forward to the winter sport season, I spoke to the boys in assembly today about my expectations of them on and off the field.  As Bishops parents and supporters, I would also encourage you to support our ethos by:

  1. Always supporting our teams in a positive way;
  2. Refrain from directing negative comments at referees, umpires, coaches, players or opposition supporters;
  3. Position yourselves well clear of the playing areas;
  4. By not approaching the officials or coaches after a match;
  5. In the event of injury, allowing the medical personnel to do their duty and only go onto the field if your expertise as a medical doctor is called upon.

Let us have a wonderful season and remember that in the end it is only a game!

Start of 3rd Term

Please note that the 3rd term will start on Wednesday 18 July for the boys.  The entire academic staff will be involved in a staff conference on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th July.

I would like to wish you and your sons a happy and productive term.

Yours faithfully

Guy Pearson
