FRIDAY 3 November 2017
Dear Parents

This week I would like to give you information about staffing changes for 2018.

Murray Anderson’s tenure as Bramley Housemaster comes to an end at the end of the year and Penny Graney has been appointed as his successor. This opens up the Assistant Housemaster position in Bramley and we have decided to move Steve Mendes (one of the Assistant Housemasters in Van der Bijl) into that position. Van der Bijl will now operate with one Assistant Housemaster.

We also have a move between the Prep and Pre-Prep with Cindy Anstey moving to Grade 2 and Laurelle Fry taking her place in Grade 3. Both are very keen on this change and it is also very useful in terms of the experience each brings of the other grade which is valuable in terms of the academic crossover between the grades.

Three very experienced teachers retire from Bishops Prep at the end of the Year: Lynne Adelbert, Sue Burgess and Di Judge.

The three new staff employed for next year are:

  • Gareth Jordan, currently Head of Mathematics as well as Master-in-Charge of Rugby at Wynberg Boys’ Junior School. Gareth will take over our Maths Department.
  • Mandy Longe, a Grade 4 class teacher and swimming and hockey coach at Wynberg Girls’ Junior School. She will be a Grade 4 Form teacher.
  • Xolani Mathyeke, currently a Natural Science and Social Science teacher at Grey Junior School in Port Elizabeth, as well as a rugby and cricket coach. He will be a Grade 5 Form teacher.

With Lynne Adelbert’s retirement, Steve Mendes will take over as Head of English. Grant de Sousa will replace Di Judge as Master-in-Charge of Tennis.

Staff moving out of positions or retiring at the end of the year have all made an enormous contribution over many years and I will acknowledge and thank them at the end of the term.

I hope you are enjoying the rain. May we have plenty more.

Kind regards

GREG BROWN
HEADMASTER

CONGRATULATIONS
Maths Olympiad

Boys from Gr 4 to 7 wrote the Amesa Maths Olympiad last term. All those who achieved more than 60% in the first round qualified to write a tough second round. 151 of our boys wrote the second round.

We are very pleased that Bishops were awarded the following number of certificates:
Gold: 7
Silver: 65
Bronze: 27
The boys received their certificates last week and were congratulated in assembly.

TAKE Note
Outreach for St Paul's

Another huge thank you to everyone who has donated balls, fizzers and lollipops towards the St Paul’s Primary Christmas goody bags. We are still short of tennis/rubber balls so if you would still like to contribute, please send the balls to the library.
Library Stocktake

It’s that time of year again. At the end of every year we sort, check and arrange all our books on the shelves. It is a big job and help would be much appreciated. If you can help any time between the 14th and 24th of November, please let Sue Kieswetter know. You may contact her on 021 6597238 or skiewswetter@bishops.org.za. No experience required and it’s quite therapeutic.
Workshop information

Anne MacDonald recommends this workshop if your children are dealing with anxiety and exam stress. Please visit MyBishopsLife, go to ParentCommuncation, scroll down to Parents and Child Support and click on the PDF "Anxiety Workshop" for further details.
Poppy Day 2017

Our Remembrance Service is on Friday 10 November and we would like as many of our boys to be wearing a poppy as we remember those who have died in war. Please could you send R5 to school next week so your son can buy a poppy from his form teacher. If you would like to donate more that would be greatly appreciated. The money collected goes to the SA Legion which is a charity which looks after Military Veterans and their spouses who are in need – mainly the elderly and those who carry life-long injuries as a result of being wounded in battle. Last year we raised more than any other institution in the Western Cape. Let us be generous again.

Running for Charity

Mr Mendes has been training hard before his participation in the Lesotho SkyRun, a gruelling race over 100km's, to raise funds for EduNova. Many thanks to the parents, boys and staff who have donated so generously to this wonderful cause. Mr Mendes has raised R12500 of the R30000 he is aiming for. If you are able to contribute, this link will take you directly to Steve’s sponsorship page.
