FRIDAY 18 June 2021
Dear Parents

VUSA CYCLATHON

A huge thank you to all those of you who supported the Vusa Cyclathon on Youth Day. 15 teams: 11 boys’ teams and 4 Prep staff teams cycled in the Mallett Centre from 16h00 on Tuesday until 16h00 on Wednesday. We are very grateful to our staff and boys who put in such a good effort. I was impressed that the plus 50 College Grade 11s and 12s gave of their time (and bodies), in such good spirits, to cycle for Vusa, not missing a single shift, even in the dark hours of midnight to 05h00. So far R266 000 has been raised through Back-a-Buddy. A huge boost for Vusa and a show of community commitment and action.

LAST WEEK OF TERM

Please note the following:

  • No extra-murals.
  • School closes on Thursday, 24 June at 11h30.
  • Mid-year reports will be available on myBishopsLife at 13h00 on Thursday.

COVID UPDATE

Since last reporting to you we have had 3 boys test positive, one in each of Grades 7, 6 and 2 and one staff member at the Prep tested positive. All the necessary protocols, tracking and tracing were followed in conjunction with our School Doctor’s advice. A few boys are also quarantining because of family members.

So a reminder that we all need to be careful and avoid any social event that could be a super spreader. Covid fatigue is a reality and we need to fight this too.

PA MEETINGS WITH TONY REELER AND MYSELF

A number of you attended PA-organised meetings earlier in the term where we reflected on where the school has come from and where it is at in terms of transformation, inclusion and diversity. The PA have prepared a summation of the content of those meetings including that of parent report back from their breakaway sessions. Please read it HERE.

This my last newsletter of the term. Thank you for your support in difficult times, where we experience regular disappointments and have to change school routines constantly. But staff and boys remain buoyant and determined to make the best of circumstances. The boys are a real tonic – they bounce back – and throw themselves into the new “way” with very little complaining. We do miss the regular face-to-face contact with you and I know you miss being able to watch your boys perform and play. We do not know when this will be possible again, but it does emphasise how precious this inter-relatedness is for us as a school community.

School opens next term on Tuesday, 20 July at 07h30.

Enjoy the holidays and some rest.

Safe travels and God Bless.

Kind regards

Bonded by biscuits!
Some of our Grade 5 boys along with boys and girls from VUSA spent time last Friday rolling out biscuits at Bishops which were kindly baked by Origin. On Saturday, our boys went out to Langa where they decorated the biscuits at the Ikhaya leLanga. A wonderful time was had by all involved. Well done to the organisers!
24 Hour Youth Day Cycle Challenge
We would like to thank the Bishops Community for their unbelievable support at the 24-Hour Youth Day Cycle Challenge held on Tuesday and Wednesday. The gruelling 24-hour challenge was to raise funds for the VUSA Rugby and Learning Academy in Langa. VUSA creates sport, academic and recreational opportunities for ECD and primary school children in Langa. The R250,000 target was exceeded and to date R266,000 has been raised which will go towards academic programme development and sport.

Thank you so much to the families who sponsored prizes for our teams and a special mention to Tank Lanning and Gray Fogarty for being extraordinary MC’s. Thank you also to Tank & Jacqui Lanning, Martin Bey and Linsay Cowan for keeping our troops fed with some impressive braai skills. OD Andrew Verster-Cohen and his incredibly professional team from Supersport Schools, streamed the event for the full 24 hours and the event was watched by more than 1000 viewers.

Finally thank you so much to all the staff and boys who participated. Not a single team left their bikes unattended and congratulations and special thanks to the winning team, Team Jordan! Gareth Jordan, Nanele Tyali, Milani Lubelwana, Khwezi Mqomboti, JP Dudley and Khets Ngcobo raised R48276.10. Thank you to everyone who supported them. Runners up were Team Fleck (Jack Pace, Nassar de Kock, Bruce Sherwood, Suleiman Hartzenberg, Luke Parker, Cameron Parker-Forsyth) and a close third place went to Team Abbott (Mak Kahla, Masi January, Simpiwe Mzukwa, Siphelele Njobeni, Fundile Badi, Siya Soci).
