Dear Parents
PUPIL LEADERSHIP
Yesterday pupil Heads of House and Deputy heads were announced in House meetings and the list of the boys appears later in the newsletter. Congratulations to them.
In the nature of any appointment or selection, there will be disappointments and differing opinions. As with a job interview, whom you are competing against affects whether you are successful or not. There are further leadership opportunities down the line at College, more of them and this is also one stage in leadership opportunities: captain of a sports team, society chair, matric committees and so on. And a lot depends on how each boy develops and what his interests are.
As with College, we do not have a prefect system but rather House leadership with every Grade 7 having a particular responsibility in the House where he will have a chance to organise and lead; from Inter-House Chess, to conflict resolution and being a break-time mediator, to Inter-House Rugby and cheerleading. We also have a Students’ Council where up to ten boys are elected by the Grade 6s and 7s after presentations by each candidate explaining what he would like to change or have developed in the school. They then meet with me once a week where we discuss school issues and ideas in a two-way process.
Each Grade 7 also mentors a Grade 4 in his House. So, our leadership opportunities focus on, “What can I do for others?”, responsibility, mentoring and adding something positive to the life of the school. This then mirrors, in an age appropriate way, the College leadership structure.
CAPS AND SUNSCREENS
We are insisting that boys are wearing caps when outside in the sun at breaktime and at sport. Please ensure that your son does have a cap and that it is marked (they can “disappear” very quickly). Do also send sunscreen with him; we will remind them to put it on before breaks and sport.
All the best for a good weekend.
Kind regards
GREG BROWN
