Dear Parents
FOUNDER'S DAY
Today we celebrate our school’s birthday so the boys will have enjoyed the Inter-House Tug-of-War as well as the Relay Gala, together with a special treat at tea time. And tonight is the Carnival!
But Founder's’ Day always starts with a special assembly where we give thanks for the life of the school, for the founding of the school by Bishop Robert Gray in 1849, and for all we, as the present custodians of Bishops, have inherited and can use and enjoy from the many boys, parents, staff and ODs who have come before us. So many have made the school what it is today. I told the boys about one such family today and that is the Guest family.
The Guest twins, John and Melville from Zimbabwe, went through Prep and College in the 1930s. Both were very good cricketers, boarded in what was then one of our boarding houses, Rossall, and later School House at College, where they were also prefects in their matric year. With the outbreak of the Second World War, both enlisted straight after school and, sadly, both died in action in their early 20s. Melville had married during the war and his son was born a month after his death in the UK.
In 1968 the twins’ father, Earnest Guest, made a huge contribution to the building of a large, formal library (in all probability the first as such), fitting it out and donating a substantial number of books. He did this in memory of his twin sons and it was named the Guest Library. In the last few years, Melville Guest, the son who never met his father, has visited the school, first to see the library named after his father and uncle, and then this year he saw the new library (replacing the Guest Library after fifty years). As you know, the new library was built with funds from the Bishops trust, generously donated by ODs and parents. So, the cycle of growth, improvement and re-invention continues, made possible by the generosity and interest of the members of the Bishops community.
Melville Guest has kindly made a donation so that a memorial to the Guest twins can be housed in the new library.
Hopefully we will see you tonight at the Carnival.
Enjoy the weekend.
Kind regards
GREG BROWN
