FRIDAY 12 August 2022
Dear Parents

I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend and that your sons spoilt the women in their lives on Tuesday, National Women’s Day.
This morning we gathered in the Jagger Hall to celebrate National Women’s Day and honour all the women on our Prep campus who play such an important role in our lives. Mr Brown explained the history of Women’s Day to the boys and told them that on August 9, 1956, there was a staged march on the Union Buildings of Pretoria. Over 20 000 women of all races attended the march in order to protest against the Urban Areas Act of 1950 amendments. The law required all South Africans defined as “black” to carry an internal passport that served to maintain segregation, control urbanization, and manage migrant labour during apartheid. The day wasn’t actually made a holiday until 1995.
Three Gr 7s introduced  some amazing, inspirational,  modern day South African women to the boys.

  • Thando Biko spoke very fondly of his grandma, Dr Mamphele Ramphele – a South African politician, an activist against Apartheid, a medical doctor, an academic and businesswoman. She was the first woman to hold the Vice-Chancellor post at a South African university. He also shared this quote of hers:

Attitudes toward other creatures is conditioned by one’s level of security with the universe.

  • Luc Bestel, our Swimming Captain, told us why Natalie Du Toit is an inspiration to him. After losing her leg in an accident, Natalie used all her energy to start swimming again and was the first woman with a disability to make a final of an able-bodied swimming event at the Commonwealth Games. He also shared this quote of Natalie’s:

Even when bad things happen, you have to try to use those bad things in a positive manner and really just take the positive out of it.

  • Jude Khoury’s most inspirational woman in his life is his mom. She juggles so many commitments and responsibilities, deals with so much, while getting everything done, too.

Even though women deserve to be celebrated every day, National Women’s Day gives you more reason to do so. The essence of Women’s Day is to acknowledge the importance of women in society, and shower on them the respect and love they are deprived of, very often.
It’s a holiday that puts the spotlight on women’s achievements, accomplishments and contributions, tries to shine a light on women’s issues, and emboldens the need to advocate and speak up for gender equality and empowerment.

Wishing a very happy Woman’s Day to strong, intelligent, talented and simply wonderful women of this world! Don’t ever forget that you are loved and appreciated.

Kind regards

CHRIS GROOM

NEWS
Rugby News
The inaugural Bishops/WPPS Barbarian game was played on Friday on the Piley Rees. The U13A teams from both schools were mixed to create a Charlton XV & a Mallet XV. Mr Mitchell officiated the special occasion. The game was played in true Bishops fashion with some good running rugby on display and plenty of tries being scored. It was an opportunity for the Grade 7 boys and parents of both schools to get to know each before Grade 8.
Science News
Dr Peter Martinez, an astrophysicist who had a son at Bishops not too long ago spent some time with “space enthusiasts” from Grade 6 and 7 answering questions.
Spotlight on Drama
Last Friday the Spotlight was put on Drama which showcased what has been happening in Drama classes across the school. The Grade 3s displayed their miming skills; the Grade 4s acted out their choral verse poem, The Crocodile; the Grade 5s took us back in time to the world of cowboys and gunslingers; Ben Klerck, from Grade 6, moved the audience with his dramatic monologue and the Grade 7s showed off their improvised scenes using paper bag masks. The Drama Club also presented a taster of what is to come with a few extracts from Shakespeare's most famous plays. This all in preparation for our production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream which will be performed in November this year in Mr Brown's garden. Watch this space!
Women's Day
We celebrated Women's Day in Assembly today. Mr Brown told the boys about the origins of Women's Day in South Africa and a few of the boys spoke about influential women in their lives. All the female staff members were invited to stand in front of the stage and were handed a wire flower by the boys, a very touching gesture of acknowledgment.
Charlton News
Charlton House collected dog food and accessories for Cape Dachshund Rescue. Many thanks to the boys and parents for their contributions.
