Dear Parents

Apple's well-known philosophy of impute suggests that people often judge quality and value through the care and attention evident in presentation.

Think of the iPhone. Before it is even switched on, the packaging, pull tabs and meticulous arrangement of every element signal thoughtfulness, precision and excellence.

That was very much my experience at the Art Exhibition last night. The beautifully curated display of work, elegant framing, multisensory engagement and digital catalogue all communicated the significance of what was on show. They invited us to appreciate not only the creativity of our boys, but also the extraordinary passion, dedication and talent of Sue Johns. How lucky our boys are to benefit from her inspiration and guidance.

Thank you for joining us for such a special evening.

Congratulations
We congratulate Chris and Sharlene Groom on the marriage of their daughter, Haley.

Staffing Update
Unfortunately, Brendan Fogarty will be absent for the remainder of the school year due to ill health.
As of Monday, 26th October, his Afrikaans and isiXhosa classes will be taught by Sharlene Groom and Milani Lubelwana respectively. We wish Brendan well and trust that he will make a full recovery.

Traffic flow and parking
On average, traffic flow around our campus has improved. Thank you to those drivers who comply with the directional flow requirements.
Regrettably, a small number of parents continue to park in the Drop and Go zone during the morning drop off period. I respectfully ask that you refrain from doing so.

When parking in the afternoon, please ensure that your vehicle is parked in the direction of traffic flow. The Metro Police are issuing fines to motorists who contravene this regulation.

Uniform
The School Shop has introduced a Bishops branded Versus sock.

Boys are welcome to wear the white branded sock as part of their PE uniform. Please note that this is an optional uniform item. A plain ankle sock remains part of the standard uniform.

Kind regards

Chapel Reflection

This week’s chapel continued our exploration of the term’s question, “Who are you becoming?”, with a focus on integrity. Following our reflection on courage, we considered how these two qualities work together: doing what is right often requires courage, particularly when nobody is watching or when our friends are making different choices.

Drawing on Luke 16:10, we reflected on Jesus’ teaching that those who can be trusted with small things can also be trusted with greater responsibilities. Character develops through everyday decisions: being honest about unfinished homework, returning lost money, playing fairly, keeping promises and supporting a boy who is being treated unkindly. These choices shape both the people we are becoming and the community we share.

We also emphasised that integrity does not mean being perfect. It means being willing to admit a mistake, accept responsibility, ask for forgiveness and take steps to repair any harm. God’s love gives us the assurance that we can acknowledge our shortcomings and begin again.

The boys were encouraged to pause when facing a difficult choice and ask: “Am I being honest? Am I being fair? Is this helping me become the person God is calling me to be?”

Our invitation to families is to continue these conversations at home, celebrating the quiet, everyday choices through which honesty, courage and trust grow.

Fairmead Concert
On Wednesday, 14 October, our flute students visited Fairmead Retirement Home to treat the residents to a special lunchtime concert. Each boy performed a solo of his choice, alongside performances by our Grade 4 Flute Trio, Grade 5 and 6 Flute Quintet, and Flute Ensemble. The residents were a wonderfully appreciative audience, offering a lovely reminder that music is about more than practising for exams - it is about sharing our talents and bringing joy to others. A big thank you to Miss Jacobs, Mrs Sheard, Mrs Gray, Miss Stanton and Miss Donson for accompanying the boys to Fairmead, and well done to all our young flautists for their wonderful performances!

KAE Flute Ensemble Prestige Evening
Following their outstanding achievement of winning gold in the overall Small Ensemble category at the Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfod (KAE), our Flute Ensemble was invited to perform their winning piece "Loch Lomond" at the KAE Prestige Evening on Friday, 16 October. Daniel Hobbs (6P), Kwamena Sam (5B), Adrien Marsal (5S), and Nicholas Hart (5B) had the honour of performing alongside top achievers from various schools and categories. Adding to their success, each ensemble member achieved excellent results in their individual eisteddfod solo entries, while Adrien and Kwamena were also awarded the silver medal for their duet. We are incredibly proud of these talented young flautists, who represented the Bishops Music Department beautifully.

VUSA News

This incredible Bishops community continues to show us what can happen when people come together to make a difference. ❤️

What started with a call from Bishops parent Craig Bowen, has helped hundreds of children and community members in Langa see the world a little more clearly.

To celebrate World Sight Day, the OneSight Essilor Luxottica Foundation brought its team to Langa for three days of free eye testing and glasses.
An initial screening was conducted with learners at Zimasa Primary School, identifying those who needed further testing. Over the three days, 486 children and community members required additional screening and received comprehensive eye tests, with 480 pairs of glasses provided free of charge.

For many of our VUSA families, an eye test and a pair of glasses are luxuries they simply cannot afford. Yet something as simple as being able to see clearly can change the trajectory of a child's education. Imagine trying to learn when you're sitting at the back of a classroom with 50 children and struggling to see the board. Or trying to complete your homework in a poorly lit home.  Sometimes, the barriers to learning are things we haven't even thought to look for.
A special thank you to Craig and his incredible team for identifying a need we have never addressed and reminding us that supporting a child's education means looking at the whole child and all the factors that influence their ability to learn.

This is what makes the Bishops community so special. Parents, families, staff and friends who generously share their time, expertise and connections to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children in Langa.

Sometimes, changing a child's future starts with simply helping them see it more clearly. ❤️
