Dear Parents

We have many exciting talks planned in the next few weeks for parents, so keep an eye on the communication so that you do not miss out on these wonderful opportunities. Thank you again for filling out our survey so that we know what you are looking for. Last night we were privelaged to be addressed by
Edwin Arrison from The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation who shared on  The Legacy of Archbishop Tutu as a Catalyst for Transformation, Diversity and Belonging. What an interesting and authentic delivery about the life of a man who always saw the glass half full!

The first short talk is next week Friday 27th May during our Coffee Connections: Resident Paediatric Physiotherapist Ashley May will be addressing the topic What are the long term effects of prematurity? The long NICU stays can be some of the most challenging for parents. You might feel that the nurses have seen more of your baby than your family has, you are needing to express breastmilk at home to drop off at the NICU, you are experiencing sleepless nights without your new bundle of joy, and you tell yourself that it will all be fine once your baby is home. You know that your child’s milestones might be a bit behind but once they start walking you are in the clear. You have healed from most of the ordeal by the time they reach school going age and life can now go on. Yes, there are days where things aren’t easy. The meltdowns, the challenges with self-regulating, struggles with concentration and attention, being a bit slower than their peers on athletics day. That’s all part of growing up, isn’t it? What if I told you that some of the challenges your child might be experiencing could be linked to their premature birth? Join us on at Coffee Connections where I will be chatting about some of the long-term effects of prematurity. I look forward to seeing you there! – Ashley” Please come along and join us.

TAKE NOTE
Extra Masks for Grade 1 and 2 boys

Please make sure that all boys have an extra mask in their bag and that they wear one on arrival at school. Many boys are arriving without masks or if their mask snaps, they do not have a spare.  Understandably we do have a few spares but these seem to be running out on a daily basis.  Thank you for your understanding.

Africa Day

This year, we celebrate Africa Day on Wednesday 25 May.  It is used specifically to celebrate Africa's independence, freedom and libertion strife from colonial powers.  The day is celebrated annually, in many different countries across the continent to commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity..  Celebrating Africa's strong cultural identity an common heritage on Africa Day.

PRE-PREP PRAYER GROUP
A Message from Mr Tsotso

The Lord be with you

Having started the week with a chapel assembly lead by our peers in Gr 2, we joined together and looked at one of the most famous and known narratives about how the Israelites were led out of Egypt from Pharoah by Moses. It was interesting to see the boys interacting and sharing how they identified the characters involved and their behaviours. We also reflected on how Pharoah constantly disobeyed God and insisted in treated people cruelly and without humility until the last thing that God had to do which broke Pharoah's heart and chased God's people out of Egypt. Through this we learnt that some behaviours and actions have very big consequences.

Let us pray

Merciful God please look upon us with pity for the many actions and behaviours we show towards others, those we do consciously or unconsciously because of our fragile nature. So we pray that your grace rests upon us and transforms us into people who are compassionate and empathetic so that we may represent you in newness of life, in Jesus Christs name.

Amen.

We are also in need of small empty boxes (from products such as toothpaste, soap, medicines etc) for box construction.  Any small offcuts of wood for woodwork would also be gratefully accepted., If any families have these items that they wish to recycle or for reuse, please send them along to school.

Parent talk: How and when to tell your kids about the birds and the bees

Ilze has recently relocated from Johannesburg to Paarl.  She has presented talks on sex education to many top schools in Johannesburg, and has written two books, ‘Where do I come from?’ and ‘Easy answers to awkward questions.’

Ilze will be discussing the importance of parents equipping their children with information about their bodies and sex in a loving and caring way, so that they do not learn incorrect and sensational mistruths from peers.  Children today are exposed to a wide source of information about sexual issues, so it is important that parents are proactive in educating their children.  What, when and how to discuss topics related to sex will be addressed, focusing on the most relevant for the Pre-Prep and Prep talks.  We encourage all parents to attend this important talk.

Wednesday the 8th of June for Pre-Prep Parents (Grade N-2) 19:00-20:30, in the Jagger Hall at the Prep School.

Thursday the 9th of June for Prep Parents (Grade 3-7) 19:00-20:30, in the Jagger Hall at the Prep School.

Ilze’s books will be available to purchase on the day.

HIGHLIGHTS
Phys Lit Testing
Our Sport and Wellness coaches have been very busy assessing boys this week, in order to track their strength and fitness.  From planking to weighing and measuring - we want to produce well rounded, healthy boys!
Grade 2

The Grade 2’s have had a busy week but the highlight has to be our Cultural Games day on Tuesday. Boys were entertained by a dynamic team from lead4life playing various games, singing songs and dancing in the hall and on the field. After school, some boys had fun in drama while others were active again on the field at their Cross Country session.

Grade 1

Our grade 1's have started exploring space! With our theme we are practising our letter formations, diagraphs, counting in 3's and measuring with a ruler. What another busy week!

Grade N

Our Grade N boys have loved the wild animal theme. We've sung songs, made masks, created animal skin patterns and printed wild animals with inks and stamps. We hope you've heard some of the songs as well as adorned your fridge or a wall with some art work!

Grade R

The Grade R boys have been hard at work, preparing presentations about their favourite reptiles.  The projects have been just incredible, teaching the teachers some new reptile facts too! Our boys have shown growing confidence and determination to present in front of their peers.  Key note speakers in the making! There is also time for some relaxation and fun, and hitching a ride on the wagon certainly is part of it!
