Dear Parents

Thank you to all those that joined us for the talk this morning by Ashley May. I am sure you all were as intrigued as I was, at her in-depth knowledge and ability to share such important information, so eloquently.

We had a fabulous Ascension Day service in the Chapel yesterday with Father Monwabisi trying to fly a kite! The boys were intrigued and if you celebrate this Day, ask your son about the story Father Monwabisi told them.

We hope to host a Family Chapel service on Monday 13 June so please try and keep that morning free so that you are able to join us. Further details to follow in the newsletters..

Mr Brown included this in his newsletter last week but ours was so jam-packed that we decided to save it for this week. Please read carefully with your son so that everyone understands what the expectations are.

Boys' hair - style, length and tidiness - can become a major issue at school and we don't want it to be. Having said that though we do wear a uniform so hair must be appropriately cut and similarly boys have to be able to concentrate, read and work without having to constantly flick their hair out of their eyes.

If you have a son at the College and Prep you will know that they re-considered their hair policy earlier in the year and have issued a new policy. We have studied that and have made some changes to ours as a result of that. However we have taken from it that which is age appropriate for Pre-Prep boys.

Most of our boys have reasonable school style haircuts but there are some who want something more stylish. So this new policy clarifies the parameters for us all so that there should not be a need for hair to be an issue at school. There is obviously always room for interpretation but in that case I would urge you to err on the side of caution. Please see our revised hair policy HERE.

.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend ahead.

Kind regards

DIARY DATES
Wednesday 8 June Ilze Alberts Talk - The birds and the bees.

Ilze will be discussing the importance of parents equipping their children with information about their bodies and sex in a loving and caring way, so that they do not learn incorrect and sensational mistruths from peers.  Children today are exposed to a wide source of information about sexual issues, so it is important that parents are proactive in educating their children.  What, when and how to discuss topics related to sex will be addressed, focusing on the most relevant for the Pre-Prep and Prep talks.  We encourage all parents to attend this important talk.

Wednesday the 8th of June for Pre-Prep Parents (Grade N-2) 19:00-20:30, in the Jagger Hall at the Prep School.

Thursday the 9th of June for Prep Parents (Grade 3-7) 19:00-20:30, in the Jagger Hall at the Prep School.

Ilze’s books will be available to purchase on the day.

TAKE NOTE
Library Bags

I have found an increasing number of boys leaving their library bags and books at home.  This week was particularly worrying. Please can I ask that you DO NOT pack your son's bag for him, but simply remind him about taking his bag (and book) to school on the correct day.  I have spoken particularly to the older boys about consequences and they are aware that no bag will result in a consequence.  The library days are in their homework diary, as well as on the parent online calendar!
PRE-PREP PRAYER GROUP
Message from our Youth Pastor

The Lord be with you

Christ is risen

He is risen indeed, Alleluia

It is always a great joy to be together with the boys at the Chapel, but it is much more when we meet twice in a week in the Memorial, and this was able to happen because we celebrated the Ascension of our Lord yesterday. It was indeed a special day and an equally beautiful message was shared by our Chaplain Father Monwabisi Peter, he illustrated his message by the use of a paper made kite. We saw it ascend and fly about whilst at the same time remained anchored into the hand of the person flying it.

The message reminded us that no matter how much we grow and ascend in life, we must always remain anchored in the love of God and uphold Christ's disciplines and teachings.

Let us pray

O, loving and Merciful God, what a sight it was to see you rise into the custody of the Author of our faith, and we now pray that you may rise up above the poverty, injustice and inequality that surrounds us. Grant that we may also be able to wait patiently for the descending of the Holy Spirit so we may be clothed with new strength.

Amen

GENERAL INFO
General dress

A fastened top button when wearing a tie is a uniform requirement (as are tied shoe laces). Please do not send boys to school with buttons not done up.  The easiest and most comfortable way to do this, is to stand behind him and fasten it. If the collar is too tight, it may be an idea to purchase a slightly bigger shirt. A reminder that rain jackets need to be removed once inside.  They are not to be worn in the classrooms as they do not allow air ventilation and eventually cause boys to sweat and then actually get cold. .
HIGHLIGHTS
Sandwich Day

A whopping 2024 sandwiches were collected between the Prep and Pre-Prep families.  A huge thank you to each and every one that made an effort to support this cause. Your generosity is quite astounding!

Grade 2
The Grade 2's have been learning the 'ay' sound this week and coloured in some stunning sets of crayons, labelling them with some 'ay' words. Last week we learnt about the 'ai' sound like in snail. Phonics can be tricky when things sound the same! We've had great fun using our Numicon apparatus in Maths to learn about grouping which will later be referred to as multiplying. Lots of hard work for these creative and clever boys!
Grade 1

The grade 1's are becoming such smart cookies learning all about 'oo' this week! We are also practicing our fine motor skills sewing moons.

We also celebrated Africa Day on Wednesday. Thank you Kwamena Sam for presenting some interesting facts on Ghana.

Grade R

The Grade Rs had a wonderful time celebrating Africa Day on Wednesday. They helped to complete a puzzle of Africa,  drew beautiful patterned, African animals to go with our Patterns in Nature theme and started a band with some African instruments. The boys have continue to strengthen their finger muscles during their Muscle Mania lessons  this week as well as use their imagination to build block jungles on the verandas on rainy days. What a creative bunch of boys!
